I read that active HSV1 or 2 can cause mild enlarged spleen at 13cm- is this correct? Also, what would be next step? No other symptoms/ CMP, CBC nml

Not HSV: You heard wrong. No HSV infection, and no individual outbreak of herpes, can cause splenic enlargement. If your spleen indeed is enlarged, you'll need to look elsewhere for causes. Seems to me the main thing is to confirm the possible enlargement. Physical exam alone is unreliable in detecting mild enlargement. You'll need some sort of abdominal imaging (CT scan, ultrasound, etc) if not yet done. ...Read more

Had CT of pelvis &abdomen- doc said all nml- report says mild enlarged spleen 13cm. She said she isn't concerned - CMP, - nml - is 13cm bad?

Mild Splenomegaly: Top normal linear measurement is 9.8 cm: http://www. Ajronline. Org/doi/abs/10.2214/ajr.184.5.01841510
3 dimensional measurement is more accurate, but 13 is likely a little juicy. Clinical importance is unclear and a medical work up seems advised, but may be unrewarding as this is non specific.
If this were me, I'd follow it with serial U/S (maybe repeat in 2-3 mos.) so you don't worry. ...Read more

U/s for gallbladder polyp and liver cyst came back fine except said spleen mild enlarge 12.2 cm. I am 48 and 5"9. Scared what does this mean?

Nothing serious: Spleen size is somewhat variable in each person. So there is no serious condition which I can think of, when a spleen is reported as "mildly enlarged" Any radiology report which says slight or mild abnormaility is mostly insignificant because a radilogist is not always sure of what may be normal or close to normal. So they often place a comment like this to cover themselves...purely defensive act! ...Read more

Us normal except-"mild heterogeneity to the spleen with borderline splenomegaly. Cannot rule out lymphomatous involvement." what does this indicate?

Funky spleen: Means that the spleen is slightly enlarged and not uniform-looking but the radiologist cannot say anything else based on that test. Could be many things including (but not exclusively) a lymphoma. Your doctor may need to do additional tests depending on the clinical picture and the reason for which he/she ordered the us to begin with. Talk to him/her about its implications. Best to you. ...Read more

Please explain this for me: there is mild dependent atelectasis near both bases. Liver: liver is lower in attenuation than the spleen, please correlat?

Collapse: Atelectasis refers to a partial collapse of the lung. Usually due to shallow breathing or other infirmary. This is common after surgery, when due to pain, you do not take deep breaths, and an incentive spirometer can help to remind you to take deep breaths.

As to the liver/spleen attenuation, that is due to congestion. ...Read more

Upper quadrant pain. Spleen borderline size 12.1cm, mild bilateral pelviectasis of kidneys. Minimal R-side hydronephrosis. Peripelvic cyst. Normal?

Probably: Pelviectasis is a general term used to describe dilation of the renal pelvis, or collecting system of the kidney and, generally, is clinically insignificant.
Hydronephrosis also refers to dilation of the renal pelvis, But has the added connotation that the pathology was caused by an obstructive process, such as a kidney stone or in your case the peripelvic cyst of Rt kidney. Unremarkable finding. ...Read more
