High LDL. : Well, your HDL is quite high which is great. You may want to liberalize your complex carbohydrate and fiber intake a bit and focus on lean proteins - saturated and trans-fats contribute to raising the LDL. If all else fails, medication may be needed. ...Read more

My fasing sugar is 142mg,/dl, s.cholestrol 211, s.triglycerides 267, HDL cholestrole 36, LDL cholestrol 146? Are these levels normal?

Metabolic Syndrome.: These numbers are not normal. In fact, they seem very consistent with something called metabolic syndrome - high blood sugar, high cholesterol, high LDL, high triglycerides, low HDL. It's linked to high insulin levels in the blood and, as you can imagine, is very atherogenic. If you're overweight, losing weight will certainly help this. ...Read more

How much do genes play part in lipid panel? My total cholesterol 170, LDL 84, HDL 80, Triglycerides 63.I eat healthy & exercise daily & also have lupus

Genetics of lipids: Genetics are a powerful determinant of cholesterol metabolism. Some people eat super healthy and still have very high cholesterol requiring medicine to control. Others eat poorly and still have low cholesterol. By the way, treatment of lupus w/ steroid drugs can also contribute to development of heart disease. For personalized advice on this, talk to your doctor or a consultant here on HealthTap. ...Read more

What do you suggest if my fasing sugar is 142mg,/dl, s.cholestrol 211, s.triglycerides 267, HDL cholestrole 36, LDL cholestrol 146?

Diabetes & lipids: Hi. Control your diabetes. Tight control of diabetes dramatically lowers risk of bad eye, kidney, nerve, heart, amputation problems happening. You need a statin and perhaps fenofibrate for your lipids (heart attack risk). Eat healthily and exercise regularly for life. Take your medicine. See an eye doctor. Make sure your blood pressure is well controlled. Good luck! ...Read more

Cholesterol test, LDL 138 Hdl 59 and triglycerides 89...are these good numbers? How is my heart disease risk? Perfect blood pressure, sugar 93.

Heart disease risk: You mention normal sugar, but your profile says type 2 diabetes and hyperlipidemia. Are you already on medications for diabetes, lipids? By themselves, those numbers are not bad, but if you have diabetes and other conditions, you are in a higher risk category. Discuss this with your doctor who can consider the whole picture. ...Read more

Exercise/cut carbs: Your LDL is high and your HDL is low. At 49 you may not need medications but it would be good for you to discuss your other risks for heart disease with your doctor to help make that decision. Things you can do to improve your LDL and HDL are exercising 30 minutes to one hour every day, cutting back on carbohydrates in your diet and add the supplement red yeast rice at 1200 mg twice a day. ...Read more

Total cholesterol 257, LDL 170, BP 110/65, sugar 93.. I know Hdl is high, but with other numbers, what's my heart risk? Ways to lower without meds?

Heart risk: By your numbers, your heart risk is high. There are some things you can do to lower it, such as losing weight if you are obese, stopping smoking, and following a good diet, but yours is high enough that it is unlikely you will be able to lower it adequately with just those measures, particularly since you're diabetic. I would discuss this with your doctor. Medications may be best for you. ...Read more

How fast can Atherosclerosis progress? No Diabetes, thin, low chol., low bp, good health but have ICA Atherosclerosis. Mom, stroke 54, Dad HRT atk 54.

Genetic factors: Some people inherit tendency to develop atherosclerosis even in absence of "traditional" risk factors. Consider screening for unusual risk factors e.g. homocysteine, abnormal lipoproteins, other hematologic factors etc. Consider aggressive Rx with e.g. statins, B-vitamins, aspirin etc. Seek out an academic cardiologist-specialist in atherosclerosis. Check out cardiology depts at Emory &/or MCG. ...Read more
