Can you please clarify why Extra Virgin olive oil which has Saturated fat lowers LDL (bad cholesterol.) Is it advised to eat lot it olive oil daily?

False statement: Olive oil does not lower LDL. Olive oil raises ldl less so compared to other fats. Although there is some saturated fat in olive oil the major component is monounsaturated fat. This topic is too complex for me to answer fully here. But suffice it to say... Small amounts of olive oil daily 1 tablespoon or less combined with a healthy diet is healthier than many other fats ( trans-fats&sat. fats) ...Read more

What does your LDL (bad cholesterol) number mean?

Blood LDL Level: LDL is "low density lipoprotein", a particle that carries cholesterol in the blood. Increased LDL is a major risk factor for heart attack, stroke and premature death. Lowering LDL can reduce this risk. LDL levels are estimated by cholesterol (LDL-C). Not really: Very low LDL cholesterol levels (less than 40) can occur genetically (hypobetalipoproteinemia), in which case such low values are present from birth, or in response to medical therapies. Can having high cholesterol cause chest pains? And on a cholesterol blood test, which is the bad cholesterol the HDL or LDL and triglycerides?

Can having high cholesterol cause chest pains? And on a cholesterol blood test, which is the bad cholesterol the HDL or LDL and triglycerides?

Yes, by heart attack: The rate at which plaque accumulates in the walls of arteries is related to the cholesterol levels. It is also greatly affected by smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, and genetic factors. When a coronary artery becomes completely occluded, the chest pain of a heart attack occurs. Bad= ldl, good= hdl. High triglycerides also increases heart risks. ...Read more

See your doctor soon: You have a very high cholesterol, which may have a genetic cause (perhaps familial hypercholesterolemia). It is hard to know what is causing your symptoms, but ischemic heart disease can certainly cause some of these. You need to see your doctor about this right away, probably a cardiologist. If the symptoms are non-cardiac (such as a migraine), you still need to have your cholesterol treated. ...Read more

Cardiac Risk?: Overall, your numbers are higher than desired. Your total and bad LDL are high. There are risk calculators that can "predict" your risk for heart disease in 10 years. Use the following link and plug in your numbers to get your risk (need BP and hdl). Start exercising and eating healthy, and make regular dr. Appointments. Pretty high: You have an especially excellent HDL which mitigates the high LDL to a large degree. 130 would be normal. 100 would be excellent. Diet is all that's recommended in your age group, unless you have diabetes. Weight loss is the key. Use a plant based diet (vegetarian like - not strict). You don't have to achieve ideal body weight - the process of losing weight will itself lower the LDL. ...Read more

Risk factors: Your father has risk factors for stroke and heart disease, that are now being treated. However, possible damage to blood vessels (atherosclerosis, decreased compliance) has already occurred. Now is the time to continue reducing his risk factors with diet, exercise, & medications. He should continue following-up with his physician for monitoring. http://www.stroke.org/site/PageServer?pagename=RISK ...Read more
