I have IIH &a daily migraines. Have episodes of hemiplegic migraine which last maximum 2 months. Scans and tests negative for stroke. What causes this?

IIH and HM: many times we don't have an answer for why IIH happens. Often we see IIH in women who have been using certain acne medications or who have gained weight rapidly, but the mechanism of this increased pressure is unknown. Hemiplegic migraines, on the other hand, are often due to a calcium channel mutation - there is a genetic tendency for this protein to let too much calcium in and cause migraine ...Read more

Does having migraine with aura put me at higher risk for stroke? I am 39.

Unfortunately yes: The risk of ischemic stroke in migraine with aura (ma) is 2x that of migraine alone. The risk of ma +tobacco+bcp is 10x that of a smoker + bcp. Recent population studies suggest that ma also increases the risk of hemorrhagic stroke. Not all strokes that occur in patients with ma are related to the headache, other etiologies may exist, such as patent foramen ovale and arterial dissection. ...Read more

How do I know if what i experienced was an aura or a mini stroke an if I should be concerned about the migraine i still have a week later.?

Control yourself: Anxiety is your worst enemy. Migraine causes constriction of the blood vessels to the brain, but should then relax and recovery with time. In rare cases this can result in a permanent deficit or "stroke". Most cases recover fully without residua. Anxiety and tension will extend the migraine and the risk. Use Aspirin and relaxation and control yourself. Get a thorough evaluation by your md. ...Read more

Only way to find out: is to get scanned. A stroke is a medical emergency. Call your doctor. If he/she doesn't think you need to go to an ER, go anyway. Migrainous strokes are usually quite small but still not to be taken lightly. A CT is likely inadequate: for migrainous strokes, MRI is the test of choice. I hate unnecessary testing, so if I'M telling you to get scanned, you know I'm concerned. ...Read more
