Possible fracture?: Or perhaps a sprain. It would be useful to understand the mechanism of injury, e.g. Sports injury? Other mechanism? A physical exam with a generalist who does family medicine or if you can afford it, an orthopedist who specializes in hand injuries is your best best for a diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. Need examination: You should be examined by a neurologist in all likelihood and very possibly you may benefit from an EMG which is an electrical test. Also, an imaging study such as CT or MRI may be requested to look the neck region. Try and discover (and document) what makes the shooting pains better and what makes them worse to tell the doctor. No injury?: Assuming you haven't injured that finger somehow (sometimes it is hard to remember...might have seemed like nothing at the time)... I'm thinking things that aren't exactly "serious", but that doesn't mean it doesn't hurt! Possibly tendinitis in that finger, or a bit of arthritis in the joint. Which thumb joint : there are three basic thumb joints. If this is at the bottom of the thumb, this is the carpometacarpal joint. It is commonly involved in osteoarthritis. Hard to diagnose : Without more history and physical exam, but would recommend you see your physician, have a thorough history and physical and discuss possibility of rheumatoid arthritis.
