Are cold sores different from genital herpes? Also, is there any medication that can supress it? I only use acyclovir cream when I have an outbreak.

Herpes: There are two herpes viruses. We now call them type one and type two. Cold sores, as you call them, are usually oral and herpes type one. That is at least 90% of the time to be true. There are three oral medications to treat and suppress. ...Read more

I've gotten 4 large bleeding cold sores in past 5 months. On aclivir for 12 months. Any prescription for relief? Over the counter creams don't help.

Recurrent cold sores: Sometimes cold sores (herpes simplex infections) break through antiviral medication treatments like acyclovir. That can happen because Acyclovir may not be strong enough. There are two stronger and longer acting antiviral medications, valacyclovir and famcyclovir that may do better at preventing recurrence. Recurrence is also more likely if daily doses are skipped even once in a while. ...Read more

However, you still should never share such a product with another person, to prevent not only herpes, but also colds, influenza, etc. Why take the chance? Better safe than sorry! However, if you also have oral herpes yourself, you can't catch it again; you are immune to new infection with same HSV type. ...Read more

I have a huge cold sore that is itchy and spreading. I heard "lemon balm cream" works. What is that and what brand should I be looking for?

See a dermatologist: First determine if it is herpes. If it is, none of the topicals do enough to warrant much discussion. Whether lemon balm or expensive prescription, once you get a sore it heals about the same whatever you put on it. The effective remedy is to have on hand valacyclovir (or acyclovir) to take 2 Gram (2x1G) at very first tingling (prodrome). This is safe, no side effects, aborts the attack or produce ...Read more
