Doctor insights on:
Just started amoxicillin/metronidazole combination treatment, will nausea last the whole treatment? feeling sick currently, and it's only day 1
Side effects: Metronidazole is known for causing nausea, although with this combination of antibiotics it could be the illness itself. I would DEFINITELY call the doctor who prescribed this treatment. Depending on what this is, you might not need the metronidazole at all. Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) could replace this combo and you would have very good 'coverage' for whatever that doc is trying to treat. Hope you can get help. ...Read more
I'm taking metronidazole 500mg 3x a day, is it normal to have a nausea feeling and is it safe for me to drink yakult?
Yes to nausea . .: Any antibiotic can cause nausea/vomiting or diarrhea. This is not an allergic reaction; just a potential side effect. Nausea, by itself, should not be a big enough problem to warrant stopping the medication. It is very important to avoid all ALCOHOL while taking any antibiotics, but especially with metronidazole, as the combination will make you very sick, and probably throw-up. Best of luck. ...Read more
Is there anything to quell the nausea from the metronidazole? will pepcid help? or affect the antibiotic in any way?
Try taking w/ food: Metronidazole certainly can cause nausea. The best preventive is to take the drug with food. Pepcid or other acid blockers probably won't help. If it continues, discuss alternative treatments, which likely are available, depending on what infection is being treated. If you definitely meed this type of drug, ask your doctor about tinidazole (Tindamax). More costly, but sometimes better tolerated. ...Read more

Hi, suffer from gallstones, been put on metronidazole 400mg for mouth infection, woke up today with severe back pain & feeling very nauseas and weak?
Not clear: Flagyl can make you very weak and sick if you take it with alcohol, but you should not get severe back pain from this. There are reports of pancreatitis and cholecystitis from flagyl, but these are very rare (and Flagyl is often used to treat acute cholecystitis). I would get in to see the physician who prescribed these to you as soon as possible, or go to the er if you can't get in today. ...Read more
Common.: Quiziness is common side-effect for most antibiotics. Carafate (sucralfate) suspension taken in advance will help. But you should be on them for a short period. Most people are not quizy on the med you mention, but that and dirarrhea are the most common side-effects. ...Read more
Is there anything to relieve nausea from flagyl? Zofran (ondansetron) doesn't seem to be helping.
Nausea from meds: Controlling nausea can sometimes be a challenge. This side effect is very well known from flagyl. Upping the dose of the zofran may help, or your doc can try a different antiemetic such as reglan (metoclopramide) or compazine (prochlorperazine). My personal favorite is ginger-- usually I will eat 2 slices of the crystallized stuff or make a ginger tea by boiling a chunk of root for 10 min then adding honey to taste ...Read more

Diverticulitis?: Perhaps you had diverticulitis which is inflammation of diverticulosis which tends to cause fever & pain in left lower quadrant. Metronidazole (Flagyl) & Ciprofloxacin (Cipro) are commonly used to treat this condition. Taking bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) and flagyl for diverticulitis. Horrible nasuea, headache and chest discomfort, body aches and just feel sick. Should i stop the med?
No: While nausea is a common adverse effect of almost any medication, the other symptoms you describe are not likely to be caused by these antibiotics. They could be caused by worsening infection, but an exam is necessary to make that determination. Seeing a doctor (preferably the prescribing doc) without delay is important in this situation. ...Read more
