...it depends: By definition, Methadone detox takes place over less than 180 days. The patient is progressively weaned over that time. Methadone maintenance, on the other hand, is more than 180 days. The decision is made by the patient, physican, counseling and social services over which route to take, and the best outcomes occur when everyone on this team takes an active role throughout the process. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Possible sleep apnea: Methadone can induce sleep apnea in susceptible individuals. You therefore need a laboratory sleep study to find out if you have obstructive sleep apnea or central sleep apnea. Both of them would need to be treated. Both can cause excessive daytime sleepiness. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

What is the ?: I don't know what information you are looking for. The best evidence is that most people need at least 2 years of treatment before considering starting a gradual dose reduction, with high rates of relapse to street drug use in people who have been on for significantly less time (6 months or less). Some people manage well with drug-free treatment, but it's only about 15% of the total. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Can 7 months of methadone treatment for heroin addiction cause a LARGE weight gain? Eating reasonably. Swelling in hands & feet.
I see it sometimes: Opiods interfere with appetite and metabolism controls in the hypothalamus. In fact, opioid blockers lead to weight loss. Hard to say: Suboxone has Naloxone it it to keep it from being tampered with to reverse overdose. Subutex is Buprenorphine by itself. Either can be used as substitute for methadone. Can be used for pain however would caution that these are not meds for chronic fatigue syndrome (cfs). Research does not support use for opioids with those with cfs or fibromyalgia. ...Read more

Options: High dose narcotics can cause low testosterone by suppressing your pituitary function. The best way to treat this is to wean off the narcotics or use the lowest amount possible while keeping your quality of life acceptable. If not possible, the next question is are you planning to conceive soon? If no, testosterone replacement will help, if yes, you need to be creative: HCG or Clomid (clomiphene) can help. ...Read more
What OTC allergy medications are safe to use while taking methadone daily for pain mgmt treatment? 140 MGS per day. Thank you.
2nd generation: antihistamines are best, because they do not increase sedation, and don't have major interactions or effects on sedation. They are all pretty much OTC these days as well. The best, in my experience, is Loratadine (Claritin). Unless you have severe congestion, I would avoid the Claritin-D or pseudephedrine (Sudafed), since it likely will give a false positive amphetamine test on urinalysis. ...Read more
Suboxone by far!: As a physician with 10 years of experience treating addiction, i feel that suboxone is a much better treatment. The main advantage of Methadone is price. Suboxone is safer in that you cannot overdose with it, unlike methadone. Suboxone blocks other opioids from getting you high (or dead), and it won't work if injected. Suboxone visits are usually monthly, not daily like at Methadone clinics. ...Read moreSee 8 more doctor answers

Methadone best alt. To narcotic painkiller to ask md for from pain due to pegasys/ribavirin treatment?
No: Ribavirin and pegylated interferon cause many many nasty symptoms, but pain is not a prominent one of them, and there is no need for opioids. I have treated over 1000 people who were getting this treatment, and i myself went through this treatment 7 years ago (and it was a success). No narcotics should be needed or used. If you are having severe pain, something else is causing it. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
