Drugs for diabetes: There are at least 12 different diabetes drugs in addition to insulin. One "easy" way (inexpensively) is to inject a dose of long acting insulin at bedtime. Injections are scarey initially but the complaints you have from the drugs you have tried will be gone and your diabetes well controlled. ...Read more

Possibly: Diarrhea caused by metformin is a fairly common symptom. Whether it'll stop or not, hard to tell. Usually, it gets better in a few weeks, but may not. You may try to take anti-diarrheal medicine in hopes it will ease it, but, again, no guarantee. If in a 3-4 weeks you are not feeling much better, i'd consider switching to a different medicine. ...Read more

Can frequent diarrhea prevent the absorption of meds? Am on janumet xr, (sitagliptin and metformin) have diarrhea multiple times a day, regardless of diet changes.

Yes: The diarrhea is not the problem. Whatever is causing you to lose a lot of water in your intestinal track may be interfering with the full absorption of some medications. Continuous diarrhea may cause a life-threatening condition as you lose important electrolytes in addition to water. See a doctor to evaluate the cause of diarrhea, which may include the medication you are taking. ...Read more

Why does metformin cause diarrhea?

Why does metformin cause diarrhea?

Side effect: Diarrhea is a common side effect to metformin that is unrelated to blood sugar control. I do not think the cause for this side effect is known. It can start immediately or years after being on the medication. The diarrhea tends to be dose related, so the higher the dose the more likely for it to occur. Sometimes it will go away when you go to a lower dose or take an extended release form. ...Read more

I read that metformin causes diarrhea but I have constipation. What's going on?

Carbs vs fat: Metformin decreases the absorption of carbs from your GI tract so if you eat a lot of simple carbs they will stay in your intestine, hold a bunch of water and cause a lot of diarrhea. If you are avoiding a lot of simple carbs (which you should) and you eat a diet high in fat (which slows your intestines) you will end up severly constipated. Increase you fluid and fiber to replace the carbs. ...Read more

Someone told me if I am on metformin, and have severe diarrhea I should stop taking it because it could cause kidney failure, is this correct, thanks?

GI symptoms common: Gastrointestinal symptoms are not uncommon with metformin. Most people take metformin for diabetes; diabetes is one of the two leading causes of kidney failure. I imagine if one got very dehydrated with diarrhea (possible), it could result in a sudden worsening of kidney function. Perhaps that was the intended message. But do check with your doctor to be certain this applies in your case. Lgromko. ...Read more
