Call the lab: You should be able to call the lab to get the reference range. Interpretation of the results will not be done by the lab. If you get a new doctor, be sure to share the results with them. Hope this helps! ...Read more

Urine (Definition)

Urine is the product of the kidneys, which is produced to eliminate the waste products of metabolism, manage body fluid balance, &maintain acid-base balance. The blood is first filtered by the kidneys, and the composition of the resulting fluid is then altered depending on the body's needs. It is composed of mostly water, and breakdown products from blood cells impart ...Read more

Should the urine tests still be performed even though the plasma free metanephrine has been done?

Should the urine tests still be performed even though the plasma free metanephrine has been done?

Often no: The plasma has more sensitive and more specific and generally adequate (better) in most situations. It would depend if the doctor is more worried about a false positive (finding pheochromcystoma you really don't have), or more worried about false negative (missing the disease when you really have it). Your doctor would decide based on your symptoms which is the bigger worry /risk. ...Read more

Why do I have to refrain from tobacco for catecholamines  and metanephrine urine test?

Why do I have to refrain from tobacco for catecholamines  and metanephrine urine test?

Nicotine...: Tobacco contains nicotine. Nicotine gives the body its kick because it stimulates the adrenal glands to produce adrenaline. Adrenaline, or epinephrine, is a catecholamine. If you use tobacco, the test may return as a false positive. ...Read more

What does it mean if my Metanephrines Total (244) and Nor/Epinephrines Totals (107) are Elevated in my urine? I just got an email from the lab that ran these tests.

What does it mean if my Metanephrines Total (244) and Nor/Epinephrines Totals (107) are Elevated in my urine? I just got an email from the lab that ran these tests.

Warrants followup: Most common reason urine metanephrines & catecholamines are checked is suspicion for pheochromocytoma, a rare adrenal gland tumor. For high levels not in pheo range (=norepi >170mcg/day epi >35/day,metanephrine>400/day), suspicion depends on risks; followup w doc is important. Some folks have higher levels normally, or are on meds interfering(TCAs, decongestants, amphetamines, antipsychotics, other) ...Read more

What makes the plasma metanephrine test different?

What makes the plasma metanephrine test different?

Different from urine: The plasma test compared to the urine is newer and more sensitive. In other words if you have pheochromocytoma the plasma test is less likely to miss the diagnosis by coming back normal. ...Read more

Can you explain the relationship between catecholamines and metanephrines?

Can you explain the relationship between catecholamines and metanephrines?

Phenol vs ether: The chemical structure of epinephrine, the natural hormone generated in excess by a pheochromocytoma tumor, has an aromatic carbon ring with two adjacent -oh (phenol) groups and a side-chain amino group. Compounds with this structure are called catecholamines. Metanephrine is a metabolite of this hormone, with one phenol converted to an ether (-och3). If elevated, it implies the tumor. ...Read more

Metanephrines (Definition)

Metanephrins are metabolic products of cathecolamines: epinephrin and norepinephrin and can be used to diagnose excess production of these adrenal/sympathetic hormones. They can be measured in blood and urine and are very elevated in a condition called pheochromocytoma which is a tumor found mostly in the adrenal glands ...Read more
