Metamucil: Metamucil is essentially a fiber supplement to your diet, and it is safe to use it on a regular basis for the long-term. In fact, it is probably good for you to do so. Eating foods that are higher in fiber is a good idea also. If you increase your fiber intake, you should also increase your fluid intake. Good luck. ...Read more

Colonoscopy: Any changes in bowel habits calls for seeing your doctor. I would recommend seeing a gastroenterologist for a colonoscopy irrespective of your age. Of note everyone at age 50 should have their 1st colonoscopy for colon cancer screening. ...Read more

Is there a difference between Metamucil and Benefiber? Is one better than the other? Are they safe to use every day?

Is there a difference between Metamucil and Benefiber? Is one better than the other? Are they safe to use every day?

Different but the: Same - almost! Both are sources of fiber. Benefiber comes from wheat dextrin, while Metamucil comes from psyllium seed. One is not necessarily better than the other, you just have to see which one your body better tolerates. Be ware, Benefiber contains exceptional small amounts of gluten, so that may come into play for a very sensitive select few. Both can be used daily. ...Read more

Started Metamucil 1 week ago. Very bloated and have lots of gas. Will that subside with use or do you always have to toot with that?

It will improve.: it is common for someone to have excessive gas and bloating after starting Metamucil. It usually improves with continued usage. One helpful hint it is to start with just a small amount per day and gradually increase it. It is also important to increase your amount of fluid intake if you are taking Metamucil. Good luck. ...Read more

Can I use fiber like metamucil while on the hcg diet, if so, is powered or pill form the best?

Can I use fiber like metamucil while on the hcg diet, if so, is powered or pill form the best?

Yes, but...: You may take Metamucil, in either form with your diet. However, the hCG diet has not been shown to be safe and effective. It is a diet with severe calorie restrictions, and can increase the risk of gallstone formation, irregular heartbeats, and electrolyte imbalances, among other side effects. I would not recommend this diet. There are safer ways to lose weight. Good luck. ...Read more

Have been feeling a dull stomach ache for three days. I use 10mg Prilosec each morning and use heaping tablespoon Metamucil after dinner. Causes?

Need more info: There are dozens of things that can give you a stomach ache. Need to know age, sex, other medical conditions, etc. Unfortunately, i can't narrow things down for you. My guess is that any acid reflux is being treated with the Prilosec (although that is a low dose) and you are regulating your bowels with the fiber. More testing is likely needed but see a medical professional so they can focus test. ...Read more

Dr said I have small anal fissure. What are the differences between fiber supplement (metamucil) and stool softener. Which one is best to use. Thanks.

Both: Fiber supplement, extra water, and stool softeners all used together are the first line treatment for anal fissure. Fiber is simply indigestible fiber that adds bulk to the stool and makes it easier for the intestines to pass it along. The stool softener causes the stool to retain enough fluid to keep it from getting hard and dry and perhaps reopening the anal fissure. Some people also use fasting. ...Read more
