Is inulin (metamucil) safe during pregnancy? I'm 28 weeks & have tried everything diet related to avoid constipation, and this type of Metamucil is the only thing that seems to work.

Yes: Yes metamucil is safe in pregnancy, however if not working other things that might help, drink plenty of water, eat prunes, you can make a fiber juice with carrots, cucumbers, celery, pinnapple, apple, mixed in a blender with natural orage juice. Lots of options: In my office we give patients a list of medications that are safe during pregnancy. The following meds and their generic equivalents can be used for constipation in pregnancy: metamucil, milk of magnesia, dulcolax oral or suppository, fiber supplements in general, high fiber foods and cereals, prune juice and if severe enough even an enema, though don't use this regularly as you contract from it. ...Read more

Actually: I allow my patients to use simethicone (gas x) for bloating. If this is from constipation, you can also use metamucil, colace, dulcolax and milk of magnesia. If your IBD causes diarrhea you can safely use immodium (generic fine), pepto bismol, kaopectate. I usually hand a list of safe meds for common problems at the first visit. Depends: Many hemorrhoids can be treated by surgical excision. Although it sounds horrific, the area can easily be numbed and the hemorrhoid removed.
