I have been diagnosed with maysethenia gravis I'm now on mestinon (pyridostigmine) I just want to know is there any better drug?

Comments: Mestinon (pyridostigmine) is a good starter drug, as it can specifically benefit the neuromuscular junctional issues chemically, but may not be the best long-term solution. A thymectomy, and steroids are other alternatives to deal with the process, but you might find additional support from a neurologist who specializes in muscle disease. ...Read more

I've had a few hives after taking many unrelated drugs, such as tylenol, (acetaminophen) nsaids, keflex, mestinon, & others. How can I be allergic to every med?

Uncommon: This is a condition known as multiple drug sensitivity syndrome and the mechanism is unknown. I suspect however that at least some of these reactions are coincidental and you need to consult an allergist to get this issue sorted out. Challenge test may be in order. ...Read more

What is the best medicine to treat pemphigus? Mestinon (pyridostigmine)?

What is the best medicine to treat pemphigus? Mestinon (pyridostigmine)?

No one best medicine: Prednisone is the drug most commonly used to treat pemphigus. Other immunosuppressive agents are used either with or instead of Prednisone depending upon the individual's response & tolerance. All of these medications have potentially significant adverse effects so management by an expert in this disease and in using these drugs is vitally important. What's best for one is not best for another. ...Read more

What is the best medicine to treat pemphigus. I have heard about mestinon (pyridostigmine) working?

Pemphigus: Phemphigus vulgaris is a potentially fatal autoimmune mucocutaneous blistering disease. Conventional therapy consists of high-dose corticosteroids, imminosuppressove agents, and intravenous immune globulin. Studies show that the biologic Rituximab and intravenous Immune Globulin is very effective with refractory pemphigus vulgaris. Mestinon (pyridostigmine) is not as effective as rituximab. ...Read more

Mestinon (pyridostigmine) for Myasthenia, why does it seem like I feel weaker & etc AFTER taking it? Yet I'm afraid NOt to take it and get weaker!! what do u think?

Don't stop it: Weakness/ fatigue are known side effects of the mestinon, (pyridostigmine) and you would suffer more if you stop it. Communicate that to your doctor on your next visit or call your doctor's office, you may need dose adjustment or ER form for less side effects, good luck ...Read more

How does mestinon (pyridostigmine) help myasthenia gravis?

How does mestinon (pyridostigmine) help myasthenia gravis?

Activate muscle: Myasthenia disrupts the connection between nerve and muscle by reducing the number of receptors for a transmitter called acetylcholine. Mestinon (pyridostigmine) prevents acetylcholine from being broken down in the body, giving it more time to diffuse along the muscle and activate the remaining receptors. The net result is to restore effective transmission between nerve and muscle. ...Read more

Not long ago diagnosed with myasthenia gravis and about to start mestinon (pyridostigmine). please help!?

Take Med: Take the mestinon (pyridostigmine) and see a good neurologist. Myasthenia is caused by an antibody that attacks the acetylcholine receptors on muscle tissue and leads to weakness. Mestinon (pyridostigmine) will help, but you need an expert to help care for your condition. ...Read more

Recently diagnosed with myasthenia gravis and about to start mestinon (pyridostigmine). What do I need to know?

Symptom treatment: While myasthenia reduces the effectiveness of muscle activation, Mestinon (pyridostigmine) works to increase it. It works well and starts working quickly, but does not change the course of the underlying disease- typically an immune modifying drug is used in conjunction with it to prevent disease progression. Typical side effects include diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and muscle twitches. ...Read more

Recently diagnosed with myasthenia gravis and about to start mestinon (pyridostigmine). Is it a powerful medicine?

No: Mestinon (pyridostigmine) helps to restore some of the strength you lose in myesthenia gravis. It inhibits the breakdown of the chemical your body makes and you need to let muscles contract. You are given only a dose that helps to do this, not more. ...Read more

My mom is suffering mysthania gravis from 5 years. She was taking mestinon (pyridostigmine). But from few days the mestinon (pyridostigmine) is not working well. So what she will do?

Needs re-evaluated: Mild myesthenia is treated symptomatically with mestinon, but most will eventually have to be treated by treating the actual disease with immune therapy, such as prednisone, ivig, cellcept (mycophenolate mofetil). These are drugs that actually block the abnormal antibodies from attacking were the nerve meet the muscles. ...Read more

How does ivig treatments help with mg? I am already on mestinon (pyridostigmine) and predisone with not much change.

Can stabilize: On occasion, ivig can interrupt a period of poor responsivity to your current meds. Some pts improve after 2 or 3 ivig infusions, and stabilize. Ivig contains many immune chemicals, and since myasthenia is a problem with the neuromuscular junction, the autoimmune attack can be quelled when a relapse occurs. Unlikely that you will need this approach permanently. ...Read more

Started mestinon 30 mg 3x/day 3 weeks ago for POTS syndrome exercise fatigue. Felt great the first few days, now back to fatigue. Give it more time?

I think you asked: A similiar question a few days ago. The answer is the same. Give it more time and report the symptoms and response to your managing health care provider. You might benefit from a little more education and understanding of your disease so that you can have realistic expectations for your clinical course and treatment. My son is 6 and has Myasthenia. He is on mestinon (pyridostigmine). When do I know he does not need it everyday? Also what is the best ways to talk to him about it?

My son is 6 and has Myasthenia. He is on mestinon (pyridostigmine). When do I know he does not need it everyday? Also what is the best ways to talk to him about it?

Meds are life-long: With myasthenia gravis, treatment is life-long. Do not change his dosage without clearing it with his doctor. At his age, the best way to discuss it with him is that he has a health condition that needs treatment every day. Explain to him that the symptoms he's had are from this condition. At 6 years old, he may not understand more detailed information than this. ...Read more

Side effects of mestinon decrease w/time? Started 30 mg/day for POTS syndrome. By day 2 was able to exercise w/no fainting. Day 7, muscles feel shaky, weak

Nausea, vomiting and: upset stomach are the common side effects of mestinon. Muscle cramps, weakness or twitching of the muscles is extremely rare but not impossible. It is unlikely this dose over this short a time is responsible but not unreasonable to reduce the dose and see what happens. How does mestinon (pyridostigmine) affect speed of digestion or stomach emptying?

Moves things quicker: Because of how it works (enhances acetylcholine effect on gut) it can causes nausea/vomitting, increases peristalsis (moves bowel/gut/stomache quicker), salivation, urination frequency, as well as causing slow of heart rate and low blood pressure etc...Its only medical uses are for myasthenia gravis and as an antidote for some anesthetic agent. If u have much trouble, consult your doc. Good luck. ...Read more

Does mestinon (pyridostigmine) effect diagnostic blood test results for myasthenia gravis?

NO, NOT AT ALL: Mestinon (pyridostigmine) enhances neuromuscular junctional efficiency by enhancing acetylcholine persistence, but is NOT an immune agent like a steroid. The standard testing for myasthenia gravis looks at antibody reactions, and would be positive or negative irregardless of use of Mestinon (pyridostigmine). ...Read more

Muscle Aches: Weakness and feeling awful are not major side effects of Mestinon. It sounds like you may have a viral infection. Certainly lowering the dose won't harm you but I think it is unlikely to resolve your symptoms. ...Read more

My left eye droops, and diagnosed as myasthenia gravis, but still droops on mestinon (pyridostigmine)?

My left eye droops, and diagnosed as myasthenia gravis, but still droops on mestinon (pyridostigmine)?

Possible: First thing we need to know, how certain is the diagnosis? Was it established by blood tests, tensilon test, biopsy? If diagnosis is assuredly myesthenia gravis (mg), it is still possible for the ocular symptoms (droopy lid, double vision) to fail to respond to mestinon (pyridostigmine). See a specialist eye md (neuro-ophthalmologist) to decide if a higher dose of mestinon (pyridostigmine), steroids, or thymus surgery may help. ...Read more

My husband is taking mestinon, (pyridostigmine) methotrexate, and prednisone for myasthenia gravis. Are all 3 needed?

Quite possibly: About 1/3 can see spontaneous remission, 1/3 stabilize on chronic medications, and 1/3 have progressive difficulties. In appropriate candidates, minimally invasive thoracic surgery to remove thymus (thymectomy) can possibly cure or stabilize disease or decrease amount and/or types of meds. I seem to get a hive or two an hr or so after taking any meds. Hives from xyzal, benadryl, (diphenhydramine) mestinon, nsaids, and others. Why does any pill cause hives?

Doubtful: It is highly unlikely that anyone can be allergic to all medications with different chemical structure. The only common denominator may be from the gelatin capsule which people may be allergic. But all bets are off if you have the same problem with tablets. Suggest you consult an allergist and undergo some challenge test else you may have trouble getting emergency care. ...Read more

Diagnosed with M.G. by hosp. Specialist by symptoms and Tensilon. Neg. EMG and bloods. Responded to Mestinon (pyridostigmine) and Prednisone. Can't get treatment.

There is more to: This than the tests that you mentioned. There a number of labs to consider and there is such a thing as seronegative MG (all labs negative and doubt from everybody). In the cases of seronegative MG, a single finger EMG helps confirm the diagnosis. Not all neurologists are trained in single fiber EMG and the ones that are typically did advanced EMG training. You may have to see a major center. ...Read more
