Packaging of 9.1mg Menthol cough drops says I can take 1 drop every 2 hours. Is this the maximum amount I can safely have?

A Drop In The Bucket: Maybe they're worried about too much sugar, unless they are sugarless. In that case, maybe worried about too much Eucalyptus (menthol)--tell that to the Indian chief in his sweat lodge! So, I really don't see a problem unless you're chewing them down by the dozens, which will defeat their rather meager purpose. All-in-all I'd say you could take a few more than that as long as you don't mind your breath ...Read more

Does inhaling menthol vapors or sucking a cough drop really open up breathing passages, or just feel cold and is perceived as opening things up?

Some menthol DOES: Open up nasal passageways; however, it doesn't last very long...Sometimes it's better to use straight saline nasal spray or spray gel, because in the winter, nasal membranes will swell when they are dry. What is safe to drink for cough if breastfeeding?

Ginger and Honey: Fresh ginger tea with honey is good for a cough. Moms who are breastfeeding can safely eat honey. But babies under the age of 1 should not be given honey, corn syrup, or even maple syrup directly because of the risk of botulism. Babies don't produce enough acid in their stomach to kill the bacteria that causes botulism. Moms do. Even if they eat contaminated honey, there is no risk to baby. ...Read more

My 2 month old daughter is drinking 1 oz at a time ever 2 hours and no breastfeeding. She tickle cough 5-6 times a day. Is it normal or need to worry?

Calories taken in: Are ounces of formula times 20 calories per ounce so she is taking 12 ounces which represents 240 calories. Assuming she weighs about 3 kg her caloric intake is about 80 calories per kg per day which is ok. A tickle type cough is nothing to be worried about. Better still is to see how many wet diapers she has in a day. If at least five then she is getting adequate fluids. ...Read more

Antihistamine and decongestant containing cough meds can reduce your milk volume, so simple mucolytics are preferred. Baby was exposed to the germ before you became symptomatic, so s/he will either get it or not based on their tolerance to the germ. ...Read more
