No cough medicine: The best medicine for cough is the medicine that treats the reason you are coughing. If your cough is due to asthma you need to treat asthma. If its due to reflux treat the reflux. If its due to pneumonia, bronchitis or sinusitis then treat the infection. I do not like treating symptoms unless I know the cause. If you have a persistent cough you need to see your doctor.
Robitussin (guaifenesin): The Robitussin people make a great line of products. They very clearly spell out what is in each cough syrup. There are only a few ingredients to choose from and you don't want to take one that may be unnecessary. Choose a product that has what you need: cough med, decongestant, expectorant, tylenol, (acetaminophen) antihistamine. Most likely, there is a bottle that has the 2 or 3 things in it that you need.
Hydration/Expectoran: Best cough medicine is to treat the cause of the cough like allergies/asthma/pnumonia/copd/stop smoking if smoker and hydration by drinking more fluids which makes the secretions thin and easy to cough out expectorations with or without cough suppressant like dextromethorphen and rarely opiates there is not one cough medicine for every one. It depends if cough is dry or with expectoration ask md.
Antihistamines: Coughs are caused by mucous running down into your lungs from your nose. If you use an antihistamine (such as benedryl, Claritin (loratadine) or zyrtec) to dry up the post-nasal drip the cough will be better. It's best not to use a cough suppressant especially in children because if the mucous is not coughed up it can lead to pneumonia and cough suppressants can have dangerous side effects.
Cough: Age of the child and presenting clinical condition are important factors to consider before answering this question. Is your child having breathing difficulty, fever, could he/she have swallowed a small object, how long has the cough been going on, is your child less than 2 years old, does he/she have asthma.Cough is a protective reflex of your large airways, a prolonged cough could be bad. Call your md.
First the label: Did you take more than you should within a given period of time? Did you take the cough medicine and any other medications?
Beyond the label: You should only take cough medicine as the label indicates. Anything more is strongly prohibited.
Knowledge: The first step in treating a cough is to understand why it is happening (infection, asthma, underlying lung disease, allergy, gastric reflux, vocal cord problem, etc). Several treatment strategies exist for each cause and need to be appropriately tailored for your individual situation.See 1 more doctor answer
Depends on trigger: Cough is very common symptom and treatment is most effective when aimed at the reason for the cough. Coughing from pertussis is treated differently than cough from asthma, allergies, acid reflux, foreign body, lung tumor, pneumonia, etc. A provider skilled in lung problems can help identify the cause of cough and find the best medicine.
