Hi, for the Alzheimer's disease. How to choose btween galantamine (galantamine hydrobromide) 4mg bd or memantine 5mg?

Hi, for the Alzheimer's disease. How to choose btween galantamine (galantamine hydrobromide) 4mg bd or memantine 5mg?

Not equivalent: Galantamine (galantamine (galantamine hydrobromide) hydrobromide) is in a different class of medicines than memantine so they are not equivalent. The combination of memantine and a cholinesterase inhibitor such as galantamine (galantamine hydrobromide) is used in moderate to severe dementia to decrease behavioral symptoms. The combination appears to work better than either alone. ...Read more

Which alzheimer's drug is most effective: Aricept or namenda (memantine)?

Which alzheimer's drug is most effective: Aricept or namenda (memantine)?

Early vs later stage: Both relieve symptoms of the disease & focus on neurotransmitters key to memory and learning. Aricept focuses on acetycholine in an attempt to slow its loss because of alzheimer's. Namenda (memantine) focuses on glutamate, blocking the excess produced as a part of the disease. Namenda (memantine) is better suited to moderate to advanced stages of alzheimer's, while Aricept is for early onset through advanced stages. ...Read more

How does namenda (memantine) work?

How does namenda (memantine) work?

Neurochemistry 101: Persistent activation of central nervous system nmda receptors by the excitatory Amino Acid glutamate has been hypothesized to contribute to the symptomatology of alzheimer’s disease. Namenda (memantine) is postulated to exert its therapeutic effect through its action by blocking nmda receptors. Namenda (memantine) is approved by the fda for the treatment of moderate to severe alzheimer's dementia. ...Read more

Alzheimer's: Indicated for moderate to severe alzheimer's dementia, and used best in combination with anticholinergic drugs. I have seen that nootropics have been used to combat Adderall (dextroamphetamine and racemic amphetamine) tolerance, (memantine - namenda) looking on the internet. Holiday not an option?

I have seen that nootropics have been used to combat Adderall (dextroamphetamine and racemic amphetamine) tolerance, (memantine - namenda) looking on the internet. Holiday not an option?

Holiday maybe: What is Adderall intolerance for you? Do you mean intolerable adverse effects? If so you should discuss other treatment options with your doctor. Namenda (memantine) is marginal at best for adhd, & is more helpful for people with learning disabilities. You may have unrecognized/untreated comorbid conditions such as depression, anxiety, ocd, or learning disabilities that are complicating treatment tolerance. ...Read more

Is selegiline effective as azilect (rasagiline) for parkinsons?

MAO-B inhibitors: Both selegiline (eldepryl) and Rasagiline (azilect) are mao-b inhibitors, with a couple important differences. Azilect (rasagiline) is much more specific for mao-b, meaning no risk of serotonergic crisis when used alongside ssri antidepressants (celexa, lexapro, etc). Azilect (rasagiline) is also the only neuroprotective drug for parkinson's. Take care! ...Read more

Which is most effective in slowing down Alzheimer's: aricept, exelon, (rivastigmine) or reminyl?

No head2head study: So far, there are no head-to-head studies demonstrating that one medication is better than the other/rest. Aricept (donepezil), Exelon (rivastigmine) & Razadyne (nee Reminyl aka galantamine) are all acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChEI). Namenda (memantine) is an NMDA receptor antagonist which is often used in conjunction w/one of these AChEI to slow down progression of Alzheimer's disease. ...Read more

Is Aricept (donepezil) as affective in advanced stages alzhimers?

Possibly less: I would first ask if Alzheimer's (DAT) is the correct diagnosis. DAT is not always the correct diagnosis in cases of neurocognitive disorders (dementia). Other conditions also cause trouble with memory and thinking in advanced age and are often missed. If DAT is the correct diagnosis, Aricept (donepezil) helps slow the functional decline but not the actual disease process. New medicines are in development. ...Read more
