Doctor prescribed clonazepam 1mg for anxiety and also told me to take 10mg of melatonin everynite before bed. Is this ok and or safe?

10 mg Melatonin?: 1mg is a commonly used dose of clonazepam, and is often given at night. I agree with dr. Ali that you might not need both at the same time. The 10mg dose of melatonin seems very high. Physiologic doses of melatonin are around .3mg -- and most adults take 1-3 mg when needed. Even rozerem, (ramelteon) a prescription melatonin receptor agonist, is dosed as 8mg. You might want to re-look at your 10mg dose. ...Read more

I had chronic insomnia for the past 10 years. I have used melatonin, valerian, inositol, panthotenic acid, carrot , ginger he' etc with little success?

Time to see a doctor: You've done most supplements to improve sleep without help. It could be a hormonal imbalance causing insomnia: adrenal, thyroid and ovarian hormone imbal. Can all do it. Also depression, low blood sugar and anxiety can cause insomnia. Perhaps it's time to see a doctor who can help sort this out. ...Read more

Am on both Lexapro (escitalopram) and clonazepam. Since the Lexapro (escitalopram) should be effective now, can melatonin be used to wean off of clonazepam?

No: I would talk some more to physician about your plans before implementing them. My concern would be that melatonin would not do anything to prevent the potential seizures that could accompany the discontinuation of clonazepam. Your physician will hopefully guide you through the transition in a way that will minimize rhe risk of seizures. Stay safe! ...Read more

What sleep medicine works the best? Melatonin, hops, passionflower

What sleep medicine works the best? Melatonin, hops, passionflower

Any : Any patient who has insomnia must pay attention to their sleep hygiene. You must avoid alcohol and sedatives after 6 pm, leave bed for sex and sleep only and no tv in bed. If you can't fall asleep in bed don't stay in bed just find something else to do and come back to bed when u are a little sleepy. This will train your brain that bed is not for worrying/watching tv etc and will improve sleep. If all this does not work then you can consider other alternatives. Since melatonin is a natural supplement thus should be the first step. Sleep aids have high risk of dependance and should be tried on as needed basis only. ...Read more
