Anxiety, generally: Benzodiazepines are a class of medications known as anxiolytics meaning anti-anxiety. Many who take benzos do so chronically for anxiety disorders that are long-standing. What is safer for long term use and short term for all types of anxiety, benzodiazepines, paxil, zoloft, lexapro, buspar, (buspirone) or marijuana(used correctly)?

What is safer for long term use and short term for all types of anxiety, benzodiazepines, paxil, zoloft, lexapro, buspar, (buspirone) or marijuana(used correctly)?

Not benzo's.: Hello - long term use of benzodiazapines can lead to tolerance. Marijuana can cause marked psychiatric problems in some people including anxiety, psychosis & paranoia. Paxil can be used long -term but most of my patients have experienced more side effects with it then from Lexapro & zoloft. I see you are on Lexapro -it has an excellent side effect profile. Buspar (buspirone) is very safe for long-term use. ...Read more

Is vistaril (hydroxyzine) truly as effective in treating anxiety as a benzodiazepine?

Is vistaril (hydroxyzine) truly as effective in treating anxiety as a benzodiazepine?

Probably not: There's a reason benzodiazepines are so widely used: they work well, particularly for anxiety. Sedating antihistamines like vistiril (hydroxyzine) are non-addictive & thus preferable if they do the job. But the truth is, for most people benzodiazepines are more effective. There are other alternatives, by the way: ssris, buspar, (buspirone) beta-blockers, & sedating antidepressants (trazodone, doxepin). ...Read more

How long does Paxil (paroxetine) take to have a therapeutic effect? Why does it not work instantaneously, like benzodiazepines?

How long does Paxil (paroxetine) take to have a therapeutic effect? Why does it not work instantaneously, like benzodiazepines?

4-8 weeks: It takes about 4 to 8 weeks to see the full effects of a particular dose of paxil (paroxetine). This is because the immediate Paxil (paroxetine) effects of increasing serotonin levels in the areas that connect brain cells (synapses) are not correlated with changes in mood or anxiety; instead, receptor changes and nerve growth factors stimulated by weeks of elevated serotonin seem to be. ...Read more

What benzodiazepine works better for social anxiety? I tell my doctor 1 mg a day of clinazapam don't work but he ignores it.

What benzodiazepine works better for social anxiety? I tell my doctor 1 mg a day of clinazapam don't work but he ignores it.

So it don't work?: Using benzodiazepines as first-line treatment for anything psychiatric is a bad idea, clinazapam as much as any of the others especially if 1 mg a day don't work. You got your chronic dependence, got your sedation, got your drug & alcohol interactions, got your impaired judgment, got your tolerance, got your liver issues...your doctor is ignoring "it" for a reason: "It's" a bad idea. ...Read more
