If I don't fix an umbilical hernia, how likely are the chances I will have a strangulated bowel? (i want to know how rare it is).

1-10%, Rare/serious: Umbilical hernias are pretty common. Incarceration or strangulation (very serious, can damage intestines) occur in about 1-10% of patients with an umbilical hernia during their lifetime.

The surgery is fairly easy and simple. Strangulation is more likely if the fascia defect is small (less than 4 cm). If it causes pain, it should definitely be fixed promptly. ...Read more

My hida scan was unable to be done due to the nuclear medicine staying in my gallbladder and not releasing into my bowel. Does this mean my gallbladde?

My hida scan was unable to be done due to the nuclear medicine staying in my gallbladder and not releasing into my bowel. Does this mean my gallbladde?

Need more info: If the scan was a hida with cck (sincalide) augmentation, and the gallbladder (gb) filled with radioactive bile and then did not empty when cck was given, the gb ejection fraction should be low, and that indicates gb dysfunction.

If the radioactive substance (hida) did not even make it into the gb, it could be chronic or acute cholecystitis.

Either way, please see your healthcare provider. ...Read more

What is the best medicine for making me have a bowel movement?

What is the best medicine for making me have a bowel movement?

Start simple, but...: Docusate (per pdr) helps moisten & soften hard, dry stools. It is not a true laxative, but facilitates natural defecation, usually within 12 to 72 hours. This is safe & available for anyone over 2, & assumes normal GI anatomy without inflammation, stenosis, extrinsic or instrinsic obstruction. Change in bowels is a "red flag", like weight loss or blood in stool, that needs evaluation if persistent. ...Read more

I am taking Rabeprazole-20 twice. Can I take Peppermint Oil capsule for bowel problem with the medicine. Thanks.?

Rabeprazole: Hi, it depends why you are taking it for, if you are taking it for acid reflux I don't think it's wise to take peppermint as that might increase your reflux symptoms. Also Peppermint decreases the clearance of Rabeprazole from your body, therefore you might not need to take it twice a day, talk to your Gasteroenterologist. ...Read more

My bowel will nit move without taking laxatives. What can I do for my bowels to move freely without taking medicine. I have tried everything.

Depends: Given that you are almost 50, make sure you have had your colonoscopy. Depending on rest of medical history, I would limit carbohydrates such as breads, pasta, rice, soda and drink more water, add fiber to diet. You may also create juices (kale, etc) and blend pumpkin seeds which are high in magnesium that is also used for constipation. Make sure the seeds are completely ground. Best wishe. ...Read more

Stomach vs bowel: Fentanyl like any opioids reduces the movement of the bowels (peristaltic movements) if you have a narrowing into the bowel that needs a strong and sustained peristalsis to pass the content from one portion to the next then fentanyl it is not for you (you could get total or partial bowel obstruction)for the stomach area it does delay the gastric emptying, but does not produce obstruction. ...Read more

Irritable bowel syndrome, with pain, cramping and gases, with what medicines, drugs, can be treated?

Diet and fluids: I rarely prescribe meds for ibs. In my experience teaching people to eat and drink properly resolves most if not all symptoms when the patient is compliant and follows through. Hi fiber, 80-100 ounces non caffeine, non alcoholic beverages each day, regular meal times, excercise. Consistency is the key to being symptom free. ...Read more

Is it normal to bleed when having a bowel movement? With lupus? Could it be the medicine in taking or hemorroids

Is it normal to bleed when having a bowel movement? With lupus? Could it be the medicine in taking or hemorroids

No: Blood in the stool is not a normal occurrence but not related to lupus. If it is fresh blood with wiping after a bowel movement, then hemorrhoids can be suspected as the cause. However, if stools are dark and tar colored, then a bleed from "further upstream" in the GI tract is likely. Constipation my also cause some minor bleeding from straining. See doctor to define cause. ...Read more

Does the drug vincristine cause blood clots in the bowel, grandad had rcvp them had a blood clot in the major artery supplying the bowel?

I suspect this was..: True...True and unrelated. Coagulopathy, is not a side effect of vincristine. However, having a cancer (such as lymphoma that I suspect your dad has) can elevate clotting risk all by itself. Prednisone in rcvp can elevate risk of clotting as well. Additionally, as a 67yo man, he could have had pre-existing vascular disease that elevated his risk for clotting in those vessels that supply the gut. ...Read more

I have hemorrhoid and was given medicine hemorol. It went away. But I had pain like needle with bowel movement and blood. Now now it is blueish color.

Hemorrhoid: If the blood was bright red, it was most likely from the hemorrhoid. This bleeding will probably keep occurring from that external hemorrhoid and I recommend that you consult a proctologist or colon rectal surgeon for definitive treatment should rectal bleeding recur. ...Read more
