What are the tests for severe bleeding after giving birth?

What are the tests for severe bleeding after giving birth?

There Are Several: Most of the time, severe bleeding during or after giving birth, called a hemorrhage, is caused by problems with muscle tone of the uterus, problems with your blood clotting chemicals, retained placental tissue or trauma to the uterus. Blood tests for platelets, blood cell counts and other clotting factors help determine if the blood chemicals play a part or need to be treated. (cbc, pt/inr, ptt). ...Read more

Still Bleeding 7 months after giving birth what is wrong?

Still Bleeding 7 months after giving birth what is wrong?

Post delivery: Most commonly after delivery when bleeding is continuous as your question implies, the cause is retained material from the placenta. See your healthcare provider for advice and probably an ultrasound of the womb. If present, the retained fragments may require a "D and C", which is a scraping of the inside of your womb, and is curative. ...Read more

I have been bleeding for 3 months after giving birth nonstop. It is light but I want to know if its normal. I'm also on the depo.

Not really normal: If patients of mine are still bleeding after about 6-7 weeks, then I usually do an ultrasound to see if there's something wrong. There isn't always a problem to be found, but it's nice to know that for sure. Depo Provera (medroxyprogesterone) does cause irregular bleeding too, especially if you are not breastfeeding. In any case, i'd look into it further. ...Read more

Would you say it's average to bleed for 19 days after giving birth? Is there an average window for bleeding? My friend just had a baby 3 weeks ago.

Not unusual: Bleeding is common for 4weeks following a delivery, but occasionally my patients note persistent bleeding at their 6week exam. The overall length of flow varies, but as long as the trend is to lighter flow, I would not be concerned. There may be some times when the flow increases, but this usually abates within a few hours. Such episodes are common in the first couple of weeks following delivery. ...Read more

After giving birth I had 5 weeks of normal bleeding, but 1 week after my check up I started bleeding and haven't stopped since and its going on 3 months.

See doctor: If you've been bleeding for 3 months, this isn't normal and I would make an appt with gynecologist for evaluation. It's possible that has nothing to do with recent birth, but problem with uterus, thyroid or pituitary. See a doctor for evaluation though, bleeding could cause anemia and fatigue as well. Good luck! ...Read more

I've been bleeding for over 7 weeks after giving birth it seemed to slow down initially after 4 weeks then it got heavy. Is this normal? Or my period?

Your body: Is responding normally to not having normal hormonal balance for 10 months. Sometimes this can lead to irregular bleeding during or in between periods for a few months before you become regular again. If you are trying to get pregnant (just IF), then you will need to wait for your periods to be regular. If not, then just ride it out. If it persists beyond 3-4 months, go see a healthcare pro. ...Read more

Can I fall pregnant 3 and a half weeks after giving birth / I havnt had a period yet I am still slightly bleeding after I gave bith not much tho?

Very unlikely but: Ovulation and fertility tend to return 6 to 10 weeks after a term pregnancy is delivered and even later if you are breastfeeding around the clock. Pregnancy 3 and a half week after giving birth would be very unusual and quite unlikely. Be safe though; use an effective method of pregnancy prevention like an IUD, a subdermal implant or injections of Depo-Provera. ...Read more

Post-partum bleeding: Although you had no tears or sutures and 5 weeks is ample time to heal vaginal lacerations from giving birth, it would be prudent to see your OB-Gyn physician for an exam to rule out other causes of vaginal bleeding such as infection, polyps, fibroids, etc and bleeding disorders, and thyroid hormone levels. ...Read more

The: The simple answer is that you likely had retained pieces of the placenta that caused the bleeding, and the only way to "clean" out the uterus was via and d&c. The chance of this happening again would probably be the same as if it was your first baby/delivery. This event does not predispose you or increase your chances of having retained placenta with the next pregnancy/delivery. Try not to worry, this happens. Your doctors did the right thing.
Congrats on your new baby! ...Read more

Can I get pregnant 6 weeks postpartum if I did not get a period but stopped bleeding 4 weeks after giving birth?

Yes: Yes, definitely. You are going to release an egg from your ovary typically before you have a 'normal' menstrual cycle, so it's definitely possible to become pregnant after giving birth even without getting a period. I've had patients that have gotten pregnant just 2 weeks following delivery. ...Read more
