Do you have to have pitocin (oxytocin) when you have prolonged labor? I would like to try avoid chemical inductions due to risk of AFE, I am terrified
Had spinal fusion, preggo 2yrs after w/ prolonged labor of over 40 hours & pushed 3 hour ending in a c section. Could that have caused my new issues?
Are there any activities or hebal medicine for example that can be done at home to bring on labor more quickly?
No: Women have been looking for ways to induce labor for centuries. By "term" 40 weeks of pregnancy, most women are quite ready to go into labor, but there really isn't any known or safe way to induce labor using over the counter drugs. Babies typically come when they are ready to come. If there are medical problems that suggest that delivery should occur, there are specific medical treatments. ...Read more

If you receive a epidural during labor, will you test positive for barbituates and benzodiazapans? Drug screen was given after epidural was given!
No: Patient's who have an epidural for labor typically receive local anesthetic and may also receive an opioid narcotic. The exact medications depend on the patient, labor, anesthesiologist, obstetrician, and practice setting. I would not expect that you received barbiturates or benzodiazepines unless the epidural was also used for a c-section and those medications were administered after delivery. ...Read more
What is the best advice you can give on how to avoid a c-section and labor inducing medicine when giving birth?
Discuss with OB: Talk to your obstetrician about their attitude on c-sections verses your attitude. If you both agree that you'd like to avoid one, and/or the use of labor inducing medications, that's the best odds you can have. Leave your mind open, though. In the process of birth there are often circumstances that occur that warrant the help of a c-section or meds to protect the life & well being of baby & mom. ...Read more
