Allergy, intolerance, or viral? I get vertigo when I eat nuts, chocolate and caffeine, and basic dizziness from other foods. Started after shingles.

Inner ear issues?: If the nerves related to your inner ear get swollen they could easily result in feelings of vertigo/dizziness. Perhaps the foods are causing the nerves to swell? Post nasal drip and eustachian tube dysfunction might do it. Chinese medicine or cranial osteopathy might help. Diazepam is a western medication that would effectively treat symptoms. ...Read more

Is it more likely to have an allergy to caffeine, or stimulants in general? Skin rashes appear on lower face and upper chest. Testing for this?

Is it more likely to have an allergy to caffeine, or stimulants in general? Skin rashes appear on lower face and upper chest. Testing for this?

Quite rare: I don' recall ever seeing someone allergic to caffeine. As each stimualnt drug is quite different chemically from others an allergy to all stimulants is even less likely. There is also no skin or blood test for such an allergy but that doesn't mean it can't be done. A double-blind challenge is the method used to establish a relationship between a cause & an effect. Your local allergist can help. ...Read more

I took an allergy pill and got sleepy. I drank caffeine to wake up and I just used chew tabacco. My heart had a pinching feeling and I'm shaking bad!?

Substance&med abuse: You shouldn't do what you just did. All of what you just took cause your heart to beat fast or even arrhythmia or irregular heart beats. If you see any signs of dizziness, light headedness, you should seek medical attention by going to the er immediately. Those are signs that your brain does not get perfused sufficiently due to arrhythmia. ...Read more

Whend I drink coffee I get visibly shaky, By Gerd is awful, my stomach gets sharp pains and I get so anxious, Is it caffeine? An allergy?

Intolerance: Intolerance NOT allergy. The symptoms you describe are all classic signs of an intolerance to caffeine. It seems like you are more sensitive than most to its effects. Coffee can also aggravate GERD. To limit these symptoms either avoid coffee entirely or only drink small amounts. This is not a true allergy to caffeine, is not life-threatening, and does not require an epinephrine injector. ...Read more

Significantly reduced my caffeine intake recently and now my allergies, throat tightening etc., seem somewhat worse. Correlation or imagination?

No.: Caffeine has been shown to help with bronchodilation (relaxation of the small tubes in your lungs) which helps with air movement. Asthmatics have noted slight symptomatic benefit after ingesting caffeine. This may help your "allergies" depending on what those symptoms may be. Your dose of caffeine would also have to be taken into consideration. ...Read more

When I drink caffeine, even weak tea, I get massive headaches/migranes and abdominal cramps and need the loo a lot. Is this an allergy or an intollerce or something else? And can you recomend alternatives for quick pick-me-ups?

When I drink caffeine, even weak tea, I get massive headaches/migranes and abdominal cramps and need the loo a lot. Is this an allergy or an intollerce or something else? And can you recomend alternatives for quick pick-me-ups?

Caffeine side effect: Those symptoms are side effects of the world's most-consumed stimulant; avoid it if intolerant to it. In our fast-paced society, there's a tendency to want a push-button quick-fix; I've had patients request a med to wake up, one to sleep, one to calm down, one to feel energetic, all at same appointment. Natural pick-me-up: exercise (my wife loves running in place for about 15 to 30 seconds). ...Read more

Avoid Caffeine & Tea: It appears from your symptoms that you are very intolerant of tea itself at least and perhaps also caffeine. Caffeine is one of the biggest risk factors and causes of migraines and their recurrence. Avoidance is best option. As far as pick me ups try hydrating with more water as this always helps and get plenty of sleep. Perhaps a little chocolate if caffeine isn't the cause? ;-) be careful! ...Read more

Undetermined: At federal level - marijuana is still illegal. At state level - legalized in some, not so in others. Therefore, physicians at this time are legally bound to not recommend marijuana for routine use. More importantly, marijuana has not been studied for treatment of chronic pain and we do not know if it truly helps. Jury is still Out there.. ...Read more

Could caffeine react with homeopathic medicines?

No: Coffee -- not caffeine -- can sometimes affect people's reactions to homeopathic medicines. Responding to homeopathic medicines depends on the person's innate restorative mechanisms.
