Will I get more pain relief from nerve pain if I use a combination of both drugs like elavil and Lyrica, (pregabalin) than if I used just one?

Will I get more pain relief from nerve pain if I use a combination of both drugs like elavil and Lyrica, (pregabalin) than if I used just one?

Most likely: Since they attack "nerve" pain by different mechanisms then there is a potential for additive benefit. They are often used in combination for that purpose.

Keep in mind that medications like this do not work right away, so if you can tolerate as they "get into your system" over the course of a few weeks you will be able to see if they truly work for you. ...Read more

I am considering taking Neurontin (gabapentin) for nerve pain. Does this medication have a history of causing weight gain. I read that it did.

Gabapentin, yes: Possible weight gain. Unfortunately, doctors often do not address this when prescribing medicine, despite weight gain being very troubling for the many patients. Gabapentin differs from most other anticonvulsants, because it has minimal drug interaction potential and is not metabolized in humans. It is used for both paroxysmal and continuous neuropathic pain (nerve pain) conditions. ...Read more

I had an allergic reaction to a medication which caused pin and needles and nerve pain in my body. Can an allergic reaction cause multiple sclerosis?

You didn't and No: 1) Allergic reactions don't cause "pins and needles" or "nerve pain" (whatever that means). They cause rash, itching and swelling. Whatever kind of reaction you had, it wasn't an ALLERGIC reaction. 2) Your symptoms sound nothing like MS. 3) Nobody knows what does cause MS, but "allergic" (or whatever) reactions don't. Whoever discovers the cause of MS will win a Nobel Prize in Medicine. ...Read more

How to treat sciatica nerve pain? What none narcotic meds are good to use? Having pain in lower buttock & lower back area that shoots down the leg when pressure or walking is applied. Not sure what a good none narcotic medication is best to ask the doct

Low: Low back, buttock and "shooting" leg pain are all symptoms of a pinched nerve. It sounds like you may have that problem. If the pain is severe and limiting your activity still, the best non-narcotic medications that I have found to work for my patients are antiinflammatories such as Ibuprofen or Naproxen which are over-the-counter medications. Other non-narcotic medications include tramadol (ultram) which requires a prescription and nerve-pain medications such as gabapentin. These are all to be taken for temporary pain relief. This type of pain typically resolves with time. Ask your primary physician about these if the pain is still limiting you. If it is still going on for more than a month an MRI may be helpful to help sort out what is going on and there could be other potential treatments outside of surgery that could benefit you. ...Read more
