Needs follow-up: At this point it sounds like the stones are still in the kidney. They should not cause pain unless they start moving down the kidney tube (ureter). Drink more,,: The best way to control kidney stones is by drinking lots more fluids to help them pass out in the urine. This also helps stop them from forming. Probably not surgery: Extra-corporal shockwave lithotripsy, ESWL, does not involve any incision although performed under anesthesia or conscious sedation. No: If it is uric acid it can be dissolved. Uric acid stone does not show on plain xray but if you have history of uric acid stones, sodium bicarbonate to raise pH may dissolve stone. Most stones are calcium oxalate and cannot be dissolved. A stone that is 8X4mm is unlikely to pass on its own. Endoscopic procedure is advisable. Make sure you follow with your urologist.
