Im on inderal (propranolol) 40mg twice a day for anxiety and hyperventilation is this a good drug for such use at this dose?
Excellent!: This is the best beta blocker because it crosses the blood brain barrier better than any other. The dose is, if anything, on the high side. Many folks feel well on just 10 or 20 mg before a stressful event (but that would be 40-80 mg daily if taken twice a day, so it's not unreasonable.) Another option is Buspirone. ...Read more
Resubmitted #: inderal (propranolol) is a beta blocker. Are their any advantages of it over any other drug in its class? I doubt it. Speech making, perhaps?

Can you tell me if someone takes 300mg of inderal (propranolol) accidentally (patient is not taking these medicine regularly) how would that effect them?
See below: The BP could become excessively low and they might pass out. The heart rate might become excessively slow (with heart block) and they might pass out. That said, some people take and tolerate 240 mg of extended release a day. So one cannot predict how this individual will react. If they took the short acting form and they're not used to it, you can bet they're going to be very tired for 12 hours! ...Read more

Mom (88) on inderal (propranolol) for arrhythmia; what drug is a better choice? She's very confused; medication may be a cause.
Multiple: Inderal, because it is fat soluble, crosses into the brain and cause side effects like this. Newer beta-blockers, such as metoprolol, atenolol, bystolic, (nebivolol) among others, are water soluble, and do not enter the brain. Depending on the type of arrhythmia, calcium channel blockers such as verapamil or Diltiazem may also be choices. ...Read more
Seen psychiatrist added effoxor to my clonazepam inderal (propranolol) and remeron is this safe seen on drugs.Com major interactions ?
The main thing to : Look out for is combined sedation, lightheadedness and serotonin syndrome, which I have only seen twice in 30 years of practice. So, get up slowly if going from a lying to standing condition and let your legs dangle over the side of the bed for 30 seconds before getting up slowly. Make sure you are not getting clumsy and don't drive or operate machinery until you are sure the meds are safe for you. ...Read more

I don't do this.: Some drs use propanolol (inderal). I do not. This med is cognitively suppressive-esp if used episodically-so it can backfire. My experience is that there are better meds& methods. Also, I do not treat the anxiety only during testing or performing. Whatever meds are used should be used routinely; otherwise, it is less effective. Plus, the patient needs to be acclimated well in advance. ...Read more
Certainty?: If the paramedics were certain that a beta blocker was the overdose, they would radio the base station ER Dr with this information and might be ordered to administer glucagon to attempt to reduce its effect, or possibly epinephrine if the pulse and BP were very low. Possibly: Asthma that is active with airway bronchospasm makes a non selective beta blocker like Inderal (propranolol) problematic, because beta 2 receptor sites line the bronchial airways (wheezing might get worse). If beta blocker needed in that case would use a beta 1 specific agent (metoprolol). That said, history of asthma with no active wheezing probably not a problem for inderal (propranolol). ...Read more
