What is a chiari-brain malformation?

Basic answer: The cerebellum is the rearmost part of the brain structures as it transitions into the spinal cord holding all the nerve tracts. I have chronic severe ear infection w/csf leak since brain decompression for chiari malformation. Could inner ear & ear bones be malformed also?

Unlikely: Unless your inner ear was involved in the surgery or you were born with inner ear or ear bone malformations, the inner ear and ear bones were likely unaffected from surgery. A suboccipital decompression typically does not affect the inner ear or ear bones. I would consult your otologist for a more precise answer. ...Read more

Check EEG: Right frontal AVMs can produce peduncular hallucinations due to seizures that may worsen with Geodon (ziprasidone) (which lowers the seizure threshold) Methylphenidate also lowers the seizure threshold. (as does ECT) Paranoia may respond to seizure meds if due to sub clinical seizures. (Interictal seizure activity may be difficult to see on the EEG if the frontal lobe lesion is near the under surface. ...Read more

I took escitalopram 5mg for three days, had bad side effects: headaches, eye disturbances, weird thoughts. I have been off the medicine for almost two months, questions is has this medicine altered or damaged my brain, eyes? I have dry eyes now.

Not likely.: Medications like escitalopram, a cousin to citalopram (Celexa) can cause weird symptoms both when you start it & when you d/c it. Your symptoms are particularly unusual but, if they were caused by this med, they will go away. However, please contact your doctor. You may need a different type of anti-depressant OR those symptoms may be totally unrelated to it. Best wishes. Dr. Anne ...Read more

When damage is found in the left centrum semiovale area, what type of systems or effects can it have on the body or brain? { car wreck-hit head on l.S

Depends: "damage" is no more helpful in medicine than in car repair. The centrum semiovale is in white matter. What exactly does it look like, exactly where is the damage, how big is it, etc. Wreck may not have been the cause: true + true not necessarily related. Damage seen on MRI or ct ordered by doctor, yes? What does (s)he say & why aren't you satisfied with answer (since you're posting here)? ...Read more

Does multiple head traumas cause brain ischemia?

Post-traumatic: Repetitive head trauma results in tissue changes quite similar to alzheimers but the lesions are closer to the brain surface. This was first noted in "punch drunk syndrome" in boxing. There is likely some affect on blood flow (ischemia), as one could conceive of a local type of bruising, but this not fully clarified. Regardless the nfl and nhl are both paying a lot of attention these days. ...Read more
