Basic answer: The cerebellum is the rearmost part of the brain structures as it transitions into the spinal cord holding all the nerve tracts. This part of the brain is supposed to stop at the base of the skull, but in some people part of the cerebellum is positioned below the skull, extending between the cord & the upper vertebrae. The Chiari malformation is a broad label covering this defect. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Chronic head & back pain 10 months after brain surgery (removed malformation causing epilepsy in the left temporal lobe) and spinal tap. Why?
I have chronic severe ear infection w/csf leak since brain decompression for chiari malformation. Could inner ear & ear bones be malformed also?
Unlikely: Unless your inner ear was involved in the surgery or you were born with inner ear or ear bone malformations, the inner ear and ear bones were likely unaffected from surgery. A suboccipital decompression typically does not affect the inner ear or ear bones. I would consult your otologist for a more precise answer. ...Read more

I took escitalopram 5mg for three days, had bad side effects: headaches, eye disturbances, weird thoughts. I have been off the medicine for almost two months, questions is has this medicine altered or damaged my brain, eyes? I have dry eyes now.
Not likely.: Medications like escitalopram, a cousin to citalopram (Celexa) can cause weird symptoms both when you start it & when you d/c it. You may need a different type of anti-depressant OR those symptoms may be totally unrelated to it. Best wishes. Dr. Anne ...Read moreSee 3 more doctor answers
