Tenex (guanfacine): Tenex (guanfacine) is an antihypertensive medication. It is used to keep adults and children calm if they have heart conditions. It is an off label use for adhd and mirrors the effects of Intuniv — a long acting form of Tenex (guanfacine) prescribed for adhd. ...Read more

Is Tenex (guanfacine) good for adhd?

Sometimes.: Meds like Tenex (guanfacine) work like "addition by subtraction". By reducing "hyper"activity &subduing some impulsiveness, the patient has better self-control &can essentially make informed, beneficial choices -rather than just react excessively to various stimuli. A much better form of Guanfacine is the newer Intuniv — its long, stable delivery of the same med causes less drowsiness & is much more effective. ...Read more

My son was prescribed clonidine .5mg.2day he was taken off clonidine & put on guanfacine 1mg. Can he take guanfacine 2nite after taking clonidine a.M.?

Probably: I suspect your son was on 0.05 mg of Clonidine 2x a day; that's about the same as 1 mg of guanfacine. They're in the same family of medications, working on the same system. Talk with his doctor, but switching over that dose should not cause a problem, especially since Guanfacine typically has fewer side effects. The biggest concern is a potential spike in BP from stopping Clonidine too fast. ...Read more

I'm on 2mg/twice a day guanfacine for adhd. I think I am growing more tolerant of it. I wanted to know what is the equivalent dosage to switch over to?

Don't!: This is definitely not a DIY project. Please work w/ an expert Dr on this matter. You'll really be happier in the future for taking this approach now — I kid you not! Also, call me old-fashioned, but I'd urge you to also try specific CBT type therapy to gain self-mastery over your symptoms. It will pay off if you find someone you work well with. ...Read more

How long does guanfacine until the full benefit/maximum results are reached? Just started 4mg extended release at night

How long does guanfacine until the full benefit/maximum results are reached? Just started 4mg extended release at night

Effect is now: Guanfacine works in your brain by reducing the amount of "sympathomimetic tone"; in other words it slows things down. It is often used for ADHD and for sleep. Unlike some medications, like antidepressants that can take a few weeks to be fully effective, guanfacine should be effective within the first 2-3 uses. Give it time though, as behavior modification is also a part of the therapy. ...Read more

I have severe plantar fasciitis and found out you can have tenex done for it. I have tried everything. Will this help? I also have type 2 diabetes.

Yes: I do Tenex often for the elbow and when necessary for the plantar fascia. It is a very successful procedure. Type II DM often slows your healing, but does not mean you can not have this or a similar procedure. I also do amniotic membrane allograft and platelet rich plasma injections for plantar fasciitis with great success. Can I take remeron (mirtazapine) and guanfacine together? Remeron (mirtazapine) is an a2 antagonist and guan is an a2 agonist. Would these compliment each other or cancel out?

Well ...: These 2 medicines would not be an ideal combination as they do interact as you mentioned. Mainly you'd be concerned about a dysregulation of your blood pressure. There are a lot safer & frankly better alternatives out there — depending on what you're taking them for. Always better safe than sorry ... Hope that helps! ...Read more

Mosly well tolerated: Guanfacine has been used for treating adhd for about 15-20 years. A few years ago, a once-a-day version (intuniv) got fda approval for use in treating adhd. Both work. If I suddenly stopped taking cymbalta (40mg), Buspar (buspirone) (30mg) and Tenex (2.5mg) what, if any, withdrawl symptoms can I expect?

Don't stop suddenly!: The possible withdrawal symptoms vary widely for different people and can be very dangerous. They might be minimal but there is no way to predict so don't take chances. It's annoying to take the needed time to be safe, but it's just the way it is. You really should have a good doctor monitor the process closely and being in talk therapy as you go through it will be a good safeguard and support. Be ...Read more
