Rheumatoid arthritis for 7 yrs. On methotrexate & prednisone. Tried so many drugs (orencia, enbrel, (etanercept) humira...). Feeling defeated. What else can I try?

Other choices: Some older drugs such as Plaquenil may help, especially with fatigue. There are also newer drugs that act via different mechanisms such as actemra (tocilizumab). I assume the diagnosis of RA is definite. If not, retest other possibilities. An exercise program may be very beneficial, especially if you start slowly and build up with hurting yourself. Don't give up hope. You can get better. ...Read more

Can children take etanercept injections?

Can children take etanercept injections?

Yes, absolutely!: Etanercept(Enbrel (etanercept)) is an excellent biologic medication that helps block the chemical messenger named tumor necrosis factor alpha(TNF-alpha)that cells involved in the immune system make. By blocking TNF-alpha, the inflammation generated by the "confused" autoimmune white blood cells is blocked and can effectively put JRA/JIA active disease to sleep. I prescribe Enbrel (etanercept) in kids as young as 3 months old ...Read more

Is enbrel (etanercept) safe when breastfeeding?

Is enbrel (etanercept) safe when breastfeeding?

Maybe okay: Sorry for saying maybe, but there are no studies about using Enbrel (etanercept) while breast feeding. That said, it is unlikely that Enbrel (etanercept) passes into breast milk in large amounts. Also, Enbrel (etanercept) is not well absorbed orally, so a baby would not likely absorb a large amount of medication through breast feeding, either. If you need to use enbrel, (etanercept) it should be okay. Speak with your pediatrician. ...Read more

Combination therapy: Rheumatoid arthritis should be diagnosed and managed by a trained rheumatologist. The anti-ccp antibody is highly specific for RA. Methotrexate, in combination with other medications, can often successfully treat RA and prevent joint damage. Sometimes, MTX is combined with sulfasalazine and hydroxychloroquine. Alternatively, a "biologic" agent is added such as Etanercept (Enbrel), which blocks TNF ...Read more
