Depends : It depends on the cause of the cough and fever. If it is a virus, it has to run it's course. You need to treat the fever and give him plenty of fluids and rest. Cold medicines don't help. No set time: Unfortunately, delirium tremens can go on for indefinite periods of time, despite treatment. I presume the DTs are related to alcohol. The longer he was an alcoholic, the more his liver is damaged, & the greater the bacterial / ammonia load, the longer it can go on, even if the alcohol has "washed out" of his system, per neurologists.
