Medicine For Deltasone Allergy
I've been on 20mg/day of prednisone for the past 12 years for a severe latex allergy. Can I ever discontinue the use of this drug?
Probably not..: Since you have been on it at a significant dosage for so long, your adrenal glands are likely "suppressed", probably permanently by this time. So, my gues is that your chance of going off this medicine totally is rather low. Maybe you can lower the dose, but you should consult your doc. Good luck. ...Read more
Prednisone is a synthetic cortisone. The body makes cortisone, a natural hormone made in adrenal glands. The body converts it to Hydrocortisone to become active. 25 mg of cortisone has about same effect as 5 mgm prednisone. The average person would produce 3-6 mg of pred daily. So why use a substitute? The synthetic has more anti-inflammatory effect; but has less effect ...Read more
I find prednisone really helps me with my asthma and allergies when there aren't totally under control. Is there a less evasive drug I can take instead? Or safer dosage (than 50mg)?
Yes: Oral steroids do work very well but they are not the type of drug you want to continue for long periods. There are many side effects with long-term usage. I assume you are taking an inhaled steroid as a controller. You may need your dose adjusted. Asthma is often environmentally triggered. Check your home, etc for hidden triggers. ...Read more
I have had hives on and off for a couple of weeks now what is the cause of this? I have been taking an allergy medicine with prednisone.
Double up AH: Unfortunately, we have no explanation for most cases of hives unless there is an obvious trigger (drug, food etc). For most cases of hives lasting between 72 hrs and up to several weeks, a viral infection would be the presumed culprit. Try ah up to 4 doses per day. Prednisone should be used only if ah in high doses failed. ...Read more

Is taking 5mg of deltasone (prednisone) daily for allergies considered fairly safe for long term use?
No: Chronic Prednisone usage will create major risks for you even at a dose of 5 mg daily. They increase infection, poor wound healing, cataracts, osteoporosis and arteriosclerosis among other issues. I strongly urge you to consult an allergist and use more appropriate and safer therapies. ...Read more
Avoid prednisone: While adverse reactions (side effects) to oral steroids are common, there is a small percentage of individuals who actually have an allergy to a particular steroid. Side effects can usually be minimized by limiting the dose and duration of treatment. For a true Prednisone allergy, it would be necessary to avoid that drug and use one of the other corticosteroid drugs. ...Read more
Less so: The best treatment for food allergies defined as having symptoms after ingesting certain foods (and not just having a blood testing stating food allergy is present) is first and foremost, avoidance and secondarily by carrying epipen (jr) which is adrenaline which can be injected into the person's thigh asap after contact with the allergen. Prednisone is much less useful. ...Read more
How do Dr's or allergist decide to just treat allergies with prednisone instead of using allergy shots?
I got skin tested for food allergies and all was negative. However, I was on prednisone at the time. Should I trust the results?
How long after I've taken prednisone (for 2 nights) should I wait before I get food allergy testing? Don't want results to be affected. Thanks!
Should be Fine: 2 dose of oral prednisone shouldn't affect skin testing results. Prior to your appointment make sure you are not on any antihistamine medications as these can interfere with the histamine response required for skin testing. Get off non-sedating antihistamines for around 3-5 days prior, sedating antihistamines 1-2 days prior. ...Read more
Every spring I take 10mg prednisone 3 times a day until symptoms end to treat my severe allergies, but I am 6 months pregnant, can I still take it?
I was on the prednisone for a week for an allergy rash. My doc said I was doing so much better that I could go down 10 mg a day.
Recently had a lab blood allergy test & lots of foods were highly reactive (<25.00). I was on Prednisone at time. Could this have affected results?
What does it mean?: You're a young man in your physical and social prime. The last thing you need is to adopt a highly restrictive diet that will greatly inconvenience you, prevent you from being a good guest, and may even make you malnourished just because of some labwork. These tests are often false-positives and the diagnosis of food allergy is better made clinically. Talk with another allergist if need be. ...Read more
Cyclic barking cough occurs every 3-4 weeks. Diagnosed with asthma and allergies. Meds don't help. Only thing that takes it away is prednisone. Help!
Allergy cough: Chronic coughing episodes can be very difficult to diagnose. About 90% of the time, they are due to asthma, postnatal drainage (allergies or infections cause this) or reflux; the other 10% of the time, rare conditions. Sometimes multiple common causes. You mentioned having allergies but not using antihistamines, nasal sprays, shots or avoidance. Have your sinuses checked + don't smoke! Try a ppi. ...Read more
Took 40 mg of prednisone for the first time 3 hours ago. Still feel the wheeze I had from asthma/allergy. Isn't it supposed to take it away instantly?
Can you take Reactine allergy med with oral prednisone? Taking prednisone for contact dermatitis but still itchy!
Sure.: Read the package information to be sure it is safe for you to take. Prednisone takes 48-72 hours to work. An antihistamine may help the pain. Fragrances, aerosols, harsh soaps, and smoke also irritate the skin, so get rid of those in your environment until your dermatitis has resolved. No scented detergents, soaps, lotions, deodorants, etc. No fabric softeners at all. Avoid candles, etc. ...Read more

Taking prednisone for six days for allergies, but my eyes move rapidly sometimes? Ophthalmologist says my eyes look fine. What could it be?
Allergies occur when your immune system is triggered by envirionmental factors it should ignore--for example, pollen in the air, or dander on a cat or dog--and creates cells to fight against them. An allergic reaction typically causes itching, congestion, or drainage, and ...Read more
