What is the difference in the treatment of bp2 and the treatment of cyclothymia? (what meds are commonly used for one and what for the other?)

What is the difference in the treatment of bp2 and the treatment of cyclothymia? (what meds are commonly used for one and what for the other?)

Significant: Cyclothymia does not require a mood stabilizer. It means that you cycle between normal (euthymia) and depressed. The mainstay of treatment in cyclothymia is an antidepressant. Bipolar 2 definitely requires a mood stabilizer to prevent mania. This is an oversimplification, since the treatment of the depression in bipolar 1-2 is not at all clear cut, and anti depressants are not always effective. ...Read more

Should I be concerned if my partner has mild cyclothymia. Doctor's won't give him med's, what can happen through time without?

Psychiatrist: What your partner does with his mental health is up to him. If interested, he could consult a psychiatrist for full evaluation and get treatment recommendations. Sometimes this is more talk-therapy than medication oriented. Most primary care physicians would not be treating this disorder, and would refer it to a psychiatrist. ...Read more

What is the likelihood I have cyclothymia? I have erratic moodswings, and my self image changes. I am irritable often, and cannot easily focus.

See ans: Cyclothmia is not an easy 'checklist' diagnosis. Mood swings, irritability, poor concentration etc. Can have different causes. Consider seeing your pcp to rule out underlying medical factors. Be honest about meds you take, any alcohol/drug/tobacco/drug use and current stresses. If all is negative, see an experienced mental health professional for guidance. I hope this helps. ...Read more
