Leukotriene receptor antagonists like singulair (montelukast) & accolate, while working by different mechanisms, were found to be about as effective & safe but far more convenient to use than cromolyn. Fair: Cromolyn is effective for a subclass of patients with asthma. We lack a blood or other test to identify those persons who are likely to respond so you have to try everyone. The trial requires administration 4x/day for 30 days. Its hard for many people to stay on this schedule so some people who might be helped do not benefit.
