Azithromycin (zithromax, azithrocin, zmax, azin) is an azalide, a subclass of macrolide antibiotics. Azithromycin is one of the world's best-selling antibiotics.[not in citation given (see discussion.)] it is derived from erythromycin, with a methyl-substituted nitrogen atom incorporated into the lactone ring, thus making ...Read more

In most cases, yes: The major interactions of azithromycin is with phenytoin and warfarin, possibly digoxin, none of which are used in allergy. This is in contrast to erythromycin and clarithromycin, which may lead to sedation even with loratadine (Claritin, Alavert), which normally rarely causes sedation. ...Read more
Maybe, maybe not: These are very different antibiotics and generally treat different bacteria, although there is some overlap. Whether azithro can replace levofloxacin depends on the particular kind of infection being treated and the bacteria causing it. For example, azithro is not effective against most urinary tract infections. Disucss with the doc or clinic where you are being treated. Good luck! ...Read more
What other antibiotic is equivalent to azithromycin or leviquinn that is equally effective for someone with a penicillin allergy?
Several antibiotics: The choice of antibiotics depends a lot on which germ (there are many in the world) the doctor is trying to stop or kill. Clarithromycin (Biaxin) is similar to azithromycin (Zithromax). Ciprofloxacin (Cipro) is similar to levofloxacin (Levaquin). Antibiotic choices work much better when the bacteria or other susceptible germ is known with certainty, or with medical experience. ...Read more

Workup and follow up:
The two antibiotic classes are distinct, but it may be possible for a baby to have allergic reactions to both or either medication. Typically an allergic rash looks blotchy and is itchy. If there are other symptoms including GI upset, breathing difficulties/drooling/problems swallowing, I would advise an evaluation in the ED.
A follow up visit with your pediatrician is suggested. ...Read more

I have severe allergy allergy w/ post nasal drainage, itchy & watery eyes & sore throat. I am requesting a prescription for steroid & azithromycin ?
Not good approach: Requesting is not a good idea. Doctors examine, make a diagnosis an prescribe as see fit. Why would you need an antibiotic for allergy? An oral allergy medication +/- decongestant and possibly a nasal steroid would be a good start. Have an exam an do not request anything. ...Read more

Does having protected sex after taking Azithromycin for chlamydia hinder the efficacy of the medicine?
Depends: In general no, but since condoms leak/break, etc and if the person you had sex with still has chlamydia then you can reinfect yourself. Do something else until you both have a test of cure to show you are both negative. It does not have an effect on the pharmaceutical effect of the azithromicin. ...Read more
How do i get this horrible drug azithromycin out of my system took one 2 dose of 250mg yesterdsy at 4pm and i feel worse than from just being sick?
Your body: will slowly metabolize(liver) and excrete it(in your feces and urine) over time. Though realize it has a long half life so it will take time. But also realize you may also be feeling worse due to your underlying illness and the progression may happen to have just coincided with starting the azithromycin. I wouldn't hesitate to contact your doctor if you continue to feel worse. Best of luck ...Read more
Ceftriaxone, others: Duplicate question, same answer: Azithromycin by itself is not used for gonorrhea treatment unless other first-line treatments cannot be given, such as drug allergy. When used for gonorrhea, a 2 gram dose of AZM is needed (vs. 1 gram for chlamydia). Has persistent gonorrhea been professionally diagnosed? If so, I would recommend ceftriaxone plus doxycycline. Discuss with your doctor or clinic ...Read more
