I was told by my surgeon the reason l felt so much pain during my cataract operation was my medication can you tell my what tablets can cause this?

No tablet medication: I can think of none of usual daily tablet medications that would account for pain during cataract surgery. A good retrobulbar block anesthesia completely eliminates pain of surgery by nerve block. Topical and intracameral anesthesia blocks pain at the end organ. Both methods usually yield pain free surgery. There is a rare person whose body chemistry rapidly deactivates the "caine" anesthetics

I: I agree---going off the medicine does not good. Just let your doctor know that you are on it and he can take the necessary operative precaustions during the surgery. Don't let this stop you from having the surgery that will improve your vision.

I smoke pot. Maybe 1 hit a day if I smoke at all. Would that cause cataracts??

Very little data: There is very little data about the relationship between smoking cannabis and the development of cataracts. Smoking anything at all is not good for you (because of the particulate matter), and cannabis certainly has other ill health effects (COPD, lung and oral cancer, development of breasts (gynecomastia) in men), and some health benefits. Cataracts are not among either.

What could have caused cataract for 57+ F having controlled BP (with medicine) & sugar levels (diet only)?

Aging or diabetes: Every year there are a dozen or more patients in my practice with cataracts in their 50's that need surgery. Even though cataracts are more common in older age groups, some people get them at a younger age for unknown reasons. Diabetics in general get cataracts at an earlier age than the general population. It is thought that with wide swings in blood sugar that the lens becomes damaged.
