I've been taking advicor for five years and now my doctor is switching me to zocor (simvastatin). How long does the niacin stay in your body.. Flushing?
Good question: I researched your question: the half life of extended release Niacin in Advicor (lovastatin and niacin) is very variable, & depends on gender, dose, & individual characteristics. It peaks 5 hours after a single dose. Following years of treatment, it's probably safe to assume that it will take days (3-5) to wear off completely. Possibly longer depending on dose. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
How do I know these are real medical doctors on this app? Why would they give free medical advice?
Some do help out..: Checking on someone's credential is not that hard and there are software/ways to know whether or not someone does have a medical license or not. As you probably know, pharmacists, psychologists, phlebotomists, physical therapists etc...Are also on this website. I guess it is hard to be 100% sure, thus when in doubt, check with your own doc. Many docs do want to help out---i do. Good luck to you. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

If someone had only a few weeks to live but couldn't go to a hospital could a doctor give free advice online to help ease their suffering?
Things possible: Since I am sure there is an ongoing doctor, you can call that doctor for advise. Here we give advise but can't prescribe. That person's doctor can send prescription to the pharmacy, or send a nurse, or send a case manager, etc.. The can do things to help the family. They can even contact home hospice to come to your home. So, please call her/his doctor for help. Good luck and i pray for all of you. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Coffee: Coffee has been studied for years. It seems like every few months I see info on it. Latest info I saw was it decreases the incidence of gallstones. Some instant coffee's contain partially-hydrogenated oils. These oils are not healthy at all. Coffee stains your teeth but can be bleached out ;-) http://www.bantransfats.com/abouttransfat.html ...Read more
If you referred a child for phycological advice is that your medical decison not the phycologists?
Confusing question: I often send kids to see a specialist when it is evident that they need their specialty care. Whether this is a bone doctor or a psychologist, it is a decision based on my recognition from my training that that is what they need. Whether you split hairs & call this a medical decision or a psychological one is not the point.I use the training & experience I have as a physician to make that decision. ...Read more
