How does meconium aspiration syndrome affect a baby?

How does meconium aspiration syndrome affect a baby?

Respiratory distress: Meconium is the production the baby expels from the colon and rectum that built up while in utero. When meconium is expelled in utero and the baby's first breath results in inhaling into the lungs, the baby cannot absorb oxygen well. Sometimes we can suction it from nose, mouth and trachea and the baby will be fine. Sometimes, it is so severe, the baby needs mechanical ventilation or ecmo. ...Read more

What is the difference between meconium aspiration and meconium ileus?

Lung vs Gut: Meconium aspiration occurs when the newborn actually poops just before or during delivery into its fluid, gets some in their mouth/throat and then inhale it down into their lungs with their first breaths. Ileus is when they have trouble even passing that first poop - can indicate guts aren't working right or other problems like cystic fibrosis. One poops too early, the other not soon enough! ...Read more

Is it possible that a two month old baby die from meconium aspiration?

No: Death form massive meconium aspiration occurs in the first days after birth. If the aspiration was severe enough to kill the child, the baby would have been hospitalized since birth on all types of breathing machines and been extremely sick since day 1. If a child had meconium aspiration (small amount) could it cause issues with weight gain she is 3 months and only weighs 8lbs 8.5 oz. Her weight?

Depends: A kid with a minor meconium aspiration should not face poor weight gain unless the experience led to chronic breathing difficulties. If a kid is having to work harder to breathe, calorie expenditure for this function would take it away from growth. If the issue was treated & resolved, any failure to thrive will come from another issue. ...Read more

Growth helps: Mec aspiration may cause inflammation early injury to the lungs. Since the lungs continue to develop and grow though, the new uninjured tissue may help to minimize the long term impact of the injury. What is the difference between meconium aspiration and meconium ileus in cystic fibrosis?

Meconium: Meconium is the poo you make in the womb but are not supposed to empty until after birth. It represents bile/swallowed hair & skin cells etc & is very sticky. If you poo before birth, usually due to stress, the stuff can circulate in the bag of waters. If that material gets into your lungs before, during or after labor it can cause lung disease. CF kids have poo that's too sticky & won't pass. ...Read more

5yr girl suffers from seizures on right side body. She had a slight stroke to right side at birth from meconium aspiration. Coincidence?

What are the long-term effects if my baby had meconium aspiration syndrome? Should I be worried about any particular disease or brain damage?

What are the long-term effects if my baby had meconium aspiration syndrome? Should I be worried about any particular disease or brain damage?

Two primary issues: Mas outcomes can be divided into 2 main issues:lung & development. Since meconium passage itself comes from prenatal stress, which is a risk factor for movement disorders (CP) & learning problems. The intensity of the lung disease/ventilation/ecmo need points to further problems with oxygen supply to the brain & can amplify those issues. The lung disease could be minimal & brief or bad & long term. ...Read more

5yr girl has right side body seizures since age 3. She sufferred meconium aspiration at birth and had a slight stroke to her right side. Coincidence?

Possible relation: An injury to the left side of the brain may cause seizure activity on the right side of the body. An injury on the right side of the brain would not. Yet it may not be a coincidence that a brain injury and a seizure are related. It is possible that the location of the brain injury was not described accurately. ...Read more

My newborn son had meconium aspiration pneumonia and chest x-rays twice daily for 1 week. Does the radiation increase his risk for cancer?

My newborn son had meconium aspiration pneumonia and chest x-rays twice daily for 1 week. Does the radiation increase his risk for cancer?

No: There was a media flap some years about after a laughably bad journal study claimed that thousands of people were dying each year from routine chest x-rays. The fallacy was assuming a linear risk where the curve is really sigmoidal or exponential. Junior is gravely sick, needs the x-rays in any case, and my hope is that he will pull through. Can baby have lung aspiration disease if passed meconium within 24 hours of birth?

???????: If the baby had a meconium bowel movement before it was born then it is possible, it depends on a lot of factors like how thick and old is the meconium, how much stress the baby had, if the baby had the movement after birth then no, that is why I do not let my patients go past their due date as the risk of meconium aspiration and other problems (why that can happen anytime)is higherafter40weeks. ...Read more
