My son had hypospadias repair at age 1 and meatoplasty at 3.5, which he now needs again. Is this common? Are there possible complications for repeats?

Yes, can recur: Meatal stenosis is quite a common complication after hypospadias repair. Usually taken care by a meatoplasty. Repeat meatal stenosis has occurred which is why meatoplasty needs to be repeated. Ask your urologist whether or not a different technique will be used or whether a larger opening will be created than last time. Consider a second opinion because meatal stenosis can recur time & again. ...Read more

What kind of discomfort will my child have after a meatoplasty procedure on his penis?

What kind of discomfort will my child have after a meatoplasty procedure on his penis?

Pain on urination: Most likely he will have some pain on urination for a few days until the surgical wound heals. How well he will tolerate it depends ob the chills and his age, and how well the pain medicines prescribed by his urologist work. Kids are amazingly resilient and seem to recover from surgery much faster and better than us grown ups! Hopefully a urologist at Healthtap can give his answer to your question too. ...Read more

If I had a urethral meatoplasty as a child as a result of my circumcision, is one of the long term side effects spraying of the urine stream?

?size meatal opening: Spraying of urinary stream is common with large urethral opening if urethral meatoplasty was too "generous". Other cause of spraying stream can be a web or a band across the meatus causing 2 or more urinary streams. Recurrence of metal stenosis (Very small opening) causes a high pressure, narrow stream rather than a spraying stream. Spray can occur if there is urethral narrowing proximal to meatus ...Read more

Currently being considered for coblation nucleoplasty trial (cervical). Contained herniation. I'm in early 20's. Possible long term complications?

Coblation: Understand, these treatments are low (not zero) risk, but for what purpose? Contained herniation means that there is no pressure on the nerves, and the disc is simply not in a "normal" location within the disc space. Study? Fine. These haven't worked except temporarily in the lumbar spine. I would be pessimistic. Maximize mckenzie pt. Not heat/us/tens as they are useless. If no other option, fine. ...Read more
