Measure Gut Health
Unknown: We are still in the early stages of knowing what constitutes altered gut flora and the consequences of this. Certainly when one develops an infection with Clostridium difficile it is very apparent, due to diarrhea and abdominal pain. Short of that, however, we have insufficient evidence to give you a definite answer. The longterm effect of probiotics is still unclear also. Good luck. ...Read more
More on mid-abd pain: I agree with dr. Hicks that the stomach is the likeliest source of your "upper central abdominal" discomfort. Acid-related disease is common. Slow emptying due to a variety of reasons may be another problem attributable to the stomach. Don't ignore the possibility however of pancreas and biliary (gallbladder, bile ducts) disease, vascular pathology, or even disorders of the transverse colon. ...Read more
Why is it considered good for the gut to fast once seasonally for 24 to 72 hours? What other health benefits would such fasting bring?

Excellent health, not overweight, exercise 5 to 6 times a week. When I bend over, I sometimes feel discomfort (like a tear) in my lower left abdomen?
No risk unless...:
Probiotics are generally quite safe. There is one concerning report of patients critically ill with pancreatitis having higher risk of dying if they took probiotics, but no evidence they can increase risk of dying in anyone who isn't critically ill. I've had hundreds of patients take probiotics and most seem to benefit.

Unlikely: I couldn't think of any reason it would. This vernix, is composed of dead skin cells, hair and other debris from the sterile environment that surrounds baby. Many cosmetic firms use the material (obtained from cattle) as a collagen basis for cold cream. For this basic collagen (skin protein) to aid to the digestive system doesn't pass my BS filter. ...Read more

I suffer chronic anxiety, currently I'm fixed on my health and have a uncomfortable feeling in my abdomen only when pushed, What could this be?
What to know about yeast? I'm confident there is a problem with my gut con. Yeast. I think if I can control it my health would improve significantly.
Probably not. Sorry.: Sorry to maybe disappoint you, but "systemic" yeast infection, or yeast overgrowth in the intestine, is an urban medical myth. There is no such thing (not counting life-threatening fungal infections in people with cancer or immune deficient because of chemotherapy, etc). See a physician about your symptom and take it from there, but don't expect miracles or any yeast-related treatment. ...Read more

Is there any research on which bacteria (s) in probiotics is (are) most beneficial for gut health?

My wife's health has gotten worse. From the liver cancer she has developed escitis (spelled wrong) the swelling of her abdomen. What can I expect?
Ascites: I'm sorry about your wife. When this develops, the cancer is usually not going to be curable. The decision about what to do next is hers. Insist on getting the facts, and if she chooses hospice, you can expect she will be cared for humanely and the most distressing symptoms that attend on this fairly common situation can be managed. ...Read more
I might need two CT scans this year one for abdomen and one for chest, is that to many, could that many be risk to my health?
Very small risk: If appropriately used, the medical benefit of ct scans far outweighs the potential risks associated with radiation from ct scans. We are all exposed to natural background radiation in normal daily life, and the radiation from a ct scan is not much more than the radiation an average person gets exposed to in a year. ...Read more

I recently read an article about gut health as I suffer from fibromyalgia and am looking for better ways to manage the symptoms. A lot of the symptoms of GI candida overgrowth I could relate to. Is it possible to test for this? Who should I see?
“Fake” Diagnosis.: The possibility of Candida overgrowth as a cause of G.I. symptoms has been studied extensively and has not been found to be a real diagnosis, despite what everyone reads on the Internet. G.I. problems are very common with fibromyalgia, however. Your best bet is to consult your physician or a gastroenterologist to help you with your digestive complaints. Good luck. ...Read more

Let me see:
Having leg pain could be from many sources including blood clots especially if used oral contraceptive. Some time you do not have pain and still get blood clot. For the clot to travel to the abdomen it must be serious one and you will feel it. For this reason I do not think so.

Pain after Surgery: You don't say what surgery you had or when, and you didn't mention what your other medical problems are. It sounds to me like you should be seen by a doctor. Your surgeon must have another surgeon watching over his patients while he is gone. The things you say may or may not be serious. To be safe, I think you should call the surgeon or go to the emergency room if that is your only choice. ...Read more
