Relative rest: Vast majority of MCL injuries heal. Higher grade injuries, usually evaluated by MRI, should be protected in hinged knee brace while weight bearing typically for about 6 wks. Would probably advise against sporting activites during that time but can go about day to day activities and work. Anti-infammatories/Ice may be helpful during acute phase. ...Read more

What is a "high grade sprain of the mcl"  exactly ? What is its equivilancy on the  numbered  grading system of 1 o 3?

High grade =3=bad: The grading scale is based on finding on mri--grade 1 = minor sprain, grade 2=severe prain/partial tear, and grade 3 =complete disruption of the ligament. In general, isolated mcl injury is not repaired, but for athletes surgical correction is often recommended.
