What r u treating?: Depends on the condition you are trying to treat, if an allergic reaction, yes you can give the zyrtec, but the labels won't tell how much to give if below 2-years old, you can give 2ml to help the reaction. But if you are trying to treat other conditions as runny nose or congestion, see your pediatrician, good luck ...Read more

What drug can I give my 4 month daughter and cough? I have piriton, zyrtec (cetirizine) and allerief in the house. She weighs 7kg. Give dosage too

See doctor: It is not recommended to give infants and young children cough medicine as the cough is typically protective and the medications can be harmful. If the cough appears to be related to a cold and no difficulties breathing it should start to resolve in 7-10 days. If not getting better or not related to a cold she should be evaluated by her physician. ...Read more

How much dosage of zyrtec can I have in a day? I'm 78 years old. I'm having liquid food Ensure, for over a month, Could this result in itching allergy

How much dosage of zyrtec can I have in a day? I'm 78 years old. I'm having liquid food Ensure, for over a month, Could this result in itching allergy

Possible: Ensure has ingredients (with dairy one of them) which can be allergenic. On the other hand, at your age, dry skin may be a more likely issue. Try unscented soap, apply moisturizer on your skin <3 mins after bathing and again in 12 hrs +/- bathing. Zyrtec would not help dry skin but you can take it up to 4 x daily if needed. For food allergy, avoidance is a must. ...Read more

Why are the mg dosage of antihistamines different? Allegra is 180mg, Claritin (loratadine) is 5mg, and zyrtec is 10mg.

Potency: Although the doses are not equal they are equivalent in potency. That is the drugs will have equal efficacy at controlling congestion, runny nose etc. The doses are different because they are different compounds and those compounds are of different weight and size. ...Read more

Took 1/2 zyrtec (cetirizine) 5 hours ago. Is it safe to take 1/2 dose nyquil liquigels (1 capsule)?

Not a good idea: Nyquil has an antihistamine, cough suppressant and acetaminophen. You are already taking Cetirizine (zyrttec), so why mix medications? Why not take a whole Cetirizine to begin with? Do you really need the other ingredients? ...Read more

My body acts weird. Everytime I use Zyrtec (cetirizine) drops I get very little drowsy only on the first dose. My tolerance goes away if I stop it for long. Why?

Expected: That's true with most sedating antihistamines. One does get used to the drowsiness after a couple of weeks. Whether this is due to a faster breakdown of the drug by the liver or reconditioning of the brain- no one knows However it is believed that some impairment in performance does happen when measured by performance tools even though you may not be feeling it. ...Read more

I give my 17mnth old 1/2 teaspoon of children's zyrtec (cetirizine) for allergies but some days it's not enough. Can I increase the dose or try something differ t?

Do not increase: A 17 month old should not have allergies to inhaled items like dust or pollen. Zyrtec (cetirizine) could cause drowsiness and I would avoid long term use of zyrtec (cetirizine) in your child. If your child has a runny or stuffy nose that is unresponsive to zyrtec (cetirizine) then see your doctor to make sure there isn't an infection brewing. ...Read more

Zyrtec (cetirizine) works best for me but also is very sedating for the next 24 hrs. Can I split the pill and take a lower dose (5 mg) or even 2.5 mg children's dose? Would those doses be less sedating?

Possibly but...: Decreasing the dose may also decrease the sedative effects. But it will presumably also decrease the main effects as well. Consider trying other medications, and also ensure that you are not taking zyrtec (cetirizine)-d which is more sedating that zyrtec (cetirizine). ...Read more

My 8 year old, 72 lbs. Inadvertently just took a Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and Zyrtec at The same time, What are the Ramifications of the Double dose?

Without knowing: The doses of either, all I can say is that using cetirizine together with diphenhydramine can increase side effects like dizziness, drowsiness, and difficulty concentrating. If you're worried about how woozy he is, call his doctor for instructions about seeking after-hours care. ...Read more

Pedi. Recommended Zyrtec, (cetirizine) 9 mo boy. I mistakenly gave him 5x the dose (3 ml vs 8 drops). no visible sideeffects. Is it ok now to restart 8 drops?

No: Not to be used under 2 yrs of age. That being said, some physicians will off-label prescribe it 6 mo - 2 yr olds at around 2.5 - 5 mg/day. If you gave 3 ml (= 3 mg) it is unlikely child would have any significant side effects. Again, in general, not advisable to give kiddos under 2 antihistamines. ...Read more

Is it safe to take 2 10mg Zyrtec (cetirizine) a day in the case that my allergic reaction is worsening as the 1st dose is wearing off? Otherwise, what would be my best option?

Is it safe to take 2 10mg Zyrtec (cetirizine) a day in the case that my allergic reaction is worsening as the 1st dose is wearing off? Otherwise, what would be my best option?

Other options: If by allergic reaction you are referring to allergic rhinitis (hay fever) then you might want to think about adding additional meds to regimen to help control symptoms better. Nasal saline rinses, steroid nasal sprays, and various other OTC preparations can help alleviate allergies in conjunction with Zyrtec. See an allergist for further testing to determine sensitivities. ...Read more

Can we give our son Benadryl (diphenhydramine) 4 hrs after a dose of Zyrtec? He has bouts with itching at night and can't sleep.

Can we give our son Benadryl (diphenhydramine) 4 hrs after a dose of Zyrtec? He has bouts with itching at night and can't sleep.

Why itching?: It is medically safe to give the benadryl; however, the question leads to another - why is he having bouts of itching? Ideally, determining and treating the cause will be more effective then treating the symptoms. Does he have eczema? Does he have scabies? Does he have an allergy to the bedding/detergent used to clean the bedding? Consider the sources and eliminate them - or see local doc for eval ...Read more

Can I give my 4 year old melatonin and allergy medicine (zyrtec (cetirizine)) in the same day? If yes what would be the proper dose of melatonin?

Can I give my 4 year old melatonin and allergy medicine (zyrtec (cetirizine)) in the same day? If yes what would be the proper dose of melatonin?

Yes, but why??: There are no bad interactions between zyrtec (cetirizine) and melatonin. They are safe to use together. The bigger question is why daily melatonin. I imagine it has to do with poor sleep initiation patterns, but without knowing more, I would talk to his pediatrician about its use. A usual safe dose for a 4 y/o is 3 or 5 mg at bedtime, but as important is bedtime routine, decreased stimulation, etc. ...Read more

I was prescribed 1 dose 3mg of stromectol 2 days ago and I have been itching (more at night) unbearable. Zyrtec or Benadryl (diphenhydramine) isn't helping much?

May be connected: Stromectol (ivermectin), usually does not cause significant itching or rashes. That said, rarely there are severe allergic reactions. Also, depending on ther parasite your are treated for, some patients may develop allergic reactions because of the chemicals released by the parasites as they die. Try zyrtec in the morning and 2 Benadryl (diphenhydramine) at night. No help? See your physician or go to urgent care. ...Read more

I was urged not to take zyrtec for allergies since I'm already taking vistaril (hydroxyzine) as needed. What dose vistaril (hydroxyzine) is effective for allergies?

Vistaril (hydroxyzine): Vistaril (hydroxyzine) becomes zyrtec after going through the liver but it is less drowsy-producing. The range of dosing on vistaril (hydroxyzine) is huge ranging from 10 mg to 100 mg depending on the individual. ...Read more

My allergist wants me to take 2 zyrtec (cetirizine) morning/night for my chronic hives. How many hours in between each dose should I wait? Thanks

Every 6 hrs: You can take 2 Zyrtec (cetirizine) every 12 hrs or 1 every 6 hrs. Some may even go up to 1 tab every 4 hrs. Do note that Zyrtec (cetirizine) in higher doses can cause drowsiness and dryness in the mouth, How often you need to take the medication depends on how well you can control your hives. If one twice daily does it, that's all you need. If you need one every 6 hrs, so be it. ...Read more
