I have a hard mass under the skin in my arm, it's about an inch wide. I noticed it probably 5 years ago when it was much smaller. Should I worry?

Yes: Hi Judy.
How much to worry depends a bit on your age and what it feels like. Could just be a swollen sweat gland or oil gland (hydradenitis). But it could also be a growth that should be removed. I would strongly suggest scheduling with your general practiioner who may want to refer you to a dermatologist or surgeon. ...Read more

I have a large mass on my bicep. It can be felt when pushed it seems to swell and cause numbness in my arm. On my MRI, "no mass was detected"??

MRI can miss masses: In my experience, the most common soft tissue mass missed on MRI is a lipoma, a benign tumor made up of cells containing fat, which look very like the surrounding fat surrounding on MRI. The thin capsule may not be visible.

Numbness may be due to pressure on nerve. Other tumors such as schwannoma are less often not easily seen on MRI.

A surgeon is often the best person to evaluate these lesions ...Read more

It : It sounds like she either has an abscess (pocket of pus) or an infected sebaceous cyst. The treatment is generally an I&D (incison and drainage). It is not unusal to have drainage, the treatment is the I&D and usually people feel better, not worse. Since she is reunning fevers, the area has changed (red) and she has more pain, she needs to be re-checked. Further local incision and drainage may be needed and she may need since she is on antibiotics and is not improving. Good luck. ...Read more

Need to examine: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without taking additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. It would be prudent to see your doctor.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form.
Practice safe sex, if you have sex.

Is a chest X-ray sufficient to rule out a lung mass as the cause of chest, shoulder and arm pain or should further studies be pursued?

Is a chest X-ray sufficient to rule out a lung mass as the cause of chest, shoulder and arm pain or should further studies be pursued?

Xray can't see all: A mass large enough to cause chest pain is not likely to be missed on a properly done xray, but some very small ones at the edgesof lungs/chest wall can cause pain and not be seen on an xray. A thorough history and physical exam can help teasing musculoskeletal pain which is not visible on the xray--muscle/tendon strain or ligament sprain cannot be seen. Consult your doc. Good luck. ...Read more
