A friend has a droopy eyelid and the Opthamologist has said he has a mass behind his eye and needs to have an MRI. Does this mean it is a tumor that likely needs to operated on or radiated? Could their be some other mass less serious?
Orbital disease: A "mass" usually means there is something there that should not be. This should be carefully discussed with the doctor who told you this. ...Read more
Not likely: The axial length of the eye is the diameter or how long your eye is. A mass in the eye would not make your eye longer. The axial length can change with age, surgery, progressive myopia or other ocular conditions. See your eye doctor if you are concerned about a mass in your eye. ...Read more
I have a white spot on my sclera. I can feel it. Then there is a small pinpoint white mass underneath the same eye right below my lower lid.?
It can be: I assume that a doctor has done testing that has discovered this mass. Those tests need to be evaluated by a good specialist. Eye findings can be very tricky. Some masses are benign and cause no real problem. Others are an early sign of severe disease. Your father should get a thorough evaluation that will answer the question, but also offer a plan of treatment. ...Read more
What do you suggest if my vision is blurry due to a white mass on the iris part of my right eye. I had shingles not too long ago.?
My vision is blurry due to a white mass on the iris part of my right eye. I had shingles not too long ago. Could shingles have caused this?
Pterygium?: There are many potential etiologies. However, a pterygium fits your description and is fairly common. You can try artificial tears to see if it helps with your vision. Surgical excision is the only way to remove the pterygium. Shingles in the eye can cause scarring on the surface of the eye, but would typically be hard to see in the mirror. You should see an eye MD for evaluation and treatment. ...Read more

Fleshy mass under top eye lid (lacrimal gland) I went to the opticians he said it's not a cyst or stye no fluid within it referred me for a biopsy???
Evaluation: Presumably you saw an optometrist who advised a biopsy of a fleshy mass located in the lacrimal gland or by it. The referral to an ophthalmologist would be the next step, who will be able to advise you on the differential diagnosis of this mass. Sometimes other testing is necessary before considering a biopsy (blood tests, imaging). A tissue biopsy may be advised when definitive treatment required ...Read more
My 2 yr old niece has alternating esotropic issues. Her pediatric eye doc wants an mri. Her granddad has strabismus. How likely is this is a mass?
Extremely unlikely: Alternating esotropia is a coordination problem with the eyes in which one or the other eye takes up fixation but they do not work together. Mass lesions if they affect eye motion will usually cause a paralysis so that one eye moves poorly compared to the other. Mass lesions also are likely to cause papilledema which I assume was not seen by your pediatric ophthalmologist. ...Read more
3 yr old remission cancer patient has 7mm cyst-like mass on pineal gland, been there for over a yr, grown by 2mm. Right eye removed. What could it be?
Too complicated: I'm very sorry your little one has had to go through this. You really need to talk to your specialists about your questions, as they will have the full clinical picture. They will be able to advise you much better than a short answer from a doctor who is unfamiliar with your child's case. ...Read more

Could an eye orbital mass be metastatic lung cancer from a 11 mm lung nodule, with no swollen glands or other evidence of cancer?
Time has taught me..: ..That with cancer almost anything is possible. That said, it would be unlikely for a 1cm lung "nodule" to go only to the orbit, especially if it is not proven to be cancer. I would suggest you discuss this with your doc (there may be details he/she knows that we don't) but seems to me that further imaging or maybe a biopsy are considerations if either of those 2 lesions are suspicious enough. ...Read more
