What is oropharyngeal mass? It mesures 1 by 1 cent left lateral base of tongue, dr waiting tll I see neourologist, white matter pod right side

Otolaryngologist: A mass at the base of the tongue is of concern and an otolaryngologist should be involved. White matter changes in a brain ct scan or mri could be due to a demyelinating disease like multiple sclerosis and the neurologist is best qualified to evaluate and advise you about these findings. ...Read more

My husband had a CT scan which picked up a mass in his colon probably malignant. His liver and lung bases clear what about rest of lungs?

My husband had a CT scan which picked up a mass in his colon probably malignant. His liver and lung bases clear what about rest of lungs?

Need diagnosis: The first step is to confirm the diagnosis and find out for sure what the mass is and if it is a cancer. Colon cancer almost always goes to the liver first, so if the liver is clear, it's often possible to cure the condition with an operation to remove the primary mass. ...Read more

Ultrasounds showing mass near ovary but CT scan was normal?

See below: Ultrasound may evaluate the ovaries to better advantage when compared to ct. Occasional a small mass in the ovary may not be visible on ct. Also a ct study without contrast (dye) enhancement may not evaluate the ovaries well. ...Read more

What is the mass found on a lung during a ct-scan be?

Infection, Cancer, +: Infection, hemorrhage, tumors (benign and malignant (cancerous)) fluid and even fibrosis can have a similar appearance. If it is mostly calcified, it is likely benign, old infection called a granuloma. Comparison to older scans can help determine if it has grown. The concern is whether or not it is cancer. Recommend seeing a primary care provider, perhaps a pulmonologist consult and pet/ct. ...Read more

What does no mass effect mean in regards to a cranial CT scan?

What does no mass effect mean in regards to a cranial CT scan?

Mass effect: Can be seen as an asymmetry of normal brain structures. When problems occur in the brain (e.g., tumor, hemorrhage, stroke) the problem itself and/or any associated swelling can compress parts of the brain and distort the normal anatomy, especially the fluid-filled spaces like the ventricles and sulci. Thus, "no mass effect" indicates that the normal symmetry of the brain was seen on the ct scan. ...Read more

I have polycycitic kidney. Right kindey stopped working. I looked online records. It said no focal mass on left kindey CT scan what does that mean

Unsure: Difficult to know for sure without seeing study. Adult polycystic kidney disease of usually involves both kidneys. No "focal mass: usually means no mass effect whether cyst or tumor. Polycystic kidneys do not fail until middle age or later in life. Adult polycystic kidney disease is autosomal dominant, and commonly family history. Multicystic kidney usually causes nonfunctioning kidney from birth. ...Read more

Hi, I had a ct scan awhile back and they found a soft mass in my kidney just wondering what it could be, they didn't further explain it to me. Thank u?

Difficult to say: Without any other specific details. Angiomyolipomas and cysts are common benign kidney masses. You are somewhat young for renal cancer. You can ask your doctor to explain, or post more specific details from the CT report. ...Read more

Can CT scan miss mass in the abdomen?

Can CT scan miss mass in the abdomen?

Varies widely...: The sensitivity (how likely to be detected) of abdominal ct scans for abdominal masses varies widely depending on the type of abdominal mass and the abdominal ct technique. When both oral and intravenous contrast are used, the sensitivity is much higher (up to 90% for some masses). However, some masses are still difficult to detect and have lower sensitivity such as colonic and small bowel masses. ...Read more

Ultrasound showing a mass but CT scan normal?

Depends: This depends on the organ of interest. This is not uncommon with the ovaries and uterus as us has an advantage. This is same with the breasts as well. As for other organs in the abdomen, sometimes it may depends on the patient's body habitus or lack of intravenous contrast/dye that some finding may not be apparent on ct. ...Read more

Can you tell if a mass is cancer by looking at a CT scan?

No.: Cancer requires a biopsy to prove the diagnosis. That being said, there are some masses that are clearly benign by their imaging characteristics and some where we can be greater than 95% certain that it is cancer. ...Read more

Ct scan showed 18mm intrasellar mass in brain. What does this mean for me?

Intrasellar mass: The sella turcica is where the pituitary gland is located. Most intrasellar masses are related to the pituitary gland. There are a variety of neoplastic and non-neoplastic masses. The most common tumor in adults is pituitary adenoma. Speak with your doctor about this. You've had a CT scan, but an MRI scan is far better at evaluating these. ...Read more

I have a reactive node on my CT scan and a 2.8x2.8 CM mass on the thyroid. What does reactive mean?

D/w doctor: Reactive lymph nodes are usually due to exposure to cold virus or some type of infection and generally resolve. Question is where is the lymph node and how big is it. More concerning is mass in the thyroid which is a large size and should be evaluated by endocrinologist to see if needs a biopsy. ...Read more

Had a CT scan which showed a 4x2 mass which radilologist described as an "ovary but I had an oophorectomy 12yr ago. Us showed nothing, now what?

Confusing imaging: I'd be interested in knowing the reason for the imaging in the first place. Loops of bowel filled with stool can be very hard to tell apart from the ovary. Sometimes the opposite ovary can "migrate" to the other side and be seen there on imaging. Mostly it depends on the details of what is going on and probably repeat imaging to try to figure it all out. Feel free to ask more questions. Dr. C. ...Read more

My 18 year old nephew had a CT scan to rule out appendicitis which it was not, but the CT scan showed a mass in his cerum. What could the mass be?

Lymph tissue: Most likely this was the appendix, as it comes off the cecum, and it was probably lymph tissue which is normal in an 18 year old. If you are concerned, they could look with a colonoscopy - however, I would consider a follow up ct scan next. ...Read more

Different imaging.: Sometimes things can be well demonstrated on ct and not ultrasound and vice versa. I'd need your studies to compare. USS July diagnosed 3.8 CM simple L renal cyst. Renal CT scan yesterday showed 3cm exophytic mass arising from L upper pole looks like a cyst?? CA

Tissue is the issue: Hi. Diagnosis of what the renal mass is requires tissue for the pathologist to examine. Imaging studies may be suggestive or not, but to be certain, a pathologist must study a CT- or U/S-guided core biopsy of the mass. Sometimes surgical biopsy is necessary to determine whether benign or malignant. We don't have the means to make that determination. The mass may not be suspicious enough to biopsy ...Read more

Had a CT scan w contrast for up rt ab pain. Rslt:Pancreas full appreciated head, but is uniform w no discrete mass psbl normal variant. Is that common?

Probably normal: The comment by the radiologist that "Pancreas full appreciated head" seems incomplete. If the report is indicating the head of the pancreas appears larger than normal, that could be a normal variant, but the result interpretation depends on many other factors in your clinical history. If you have symptoms or tests of pancreatitis, this could reflect that abnormality. It is unlikely to be a tumor. ...Read more

Computed Tomography (Definition)

Ct uses xrays taken an 360 degrees combined with a computer to see"inside" the body. The table moves as the xray tube and detectors spin around the patient 10 times a second or more! The image shows excellent soft tissue detail, enhanced with injection of intravenous contrast or oral contrast. This way the body is shown in slices, in any plane, usually axially, but ...Read more
