What does a brown recluse spider bite look like I have a bite on index finger and the skin is coming off. It burns and itches, has little ant bite type bumps
A: A brown recluse bite can have different appearances. There can be almost no signs of the bite or there can be a dark escar (scab) with surrounding white tissue (that is dead). In some cases the brown recluse's bite can be necrotoxic and cause very severe damage. It can large amounts of skin to die and can eat into the muscle as well. This type of reaction is usually associated with fever, muscle and joint pain and feeling very ill. I can not diagnose the cause of your symptoms. Brown recluses are actually very little and non-descript looking. If your skin is sloughing off your finger - do recommend that this be medically evaluated. ...Read more

Is laser skin resurfacing efficient for smoothing facial burn marks? I suffered a work accident six years ago that caused burns of my face. Having researched various skin smoothing procedures, I came to the conclusion that laser skin resurfacing is the le
Laser skin resurfacing can be effective in improving skin texture. However, the severity of a burn will determine if a laser can be utilized. Burns that have injured the deeper layers of the skin may not be amenable to skin resurfacing. The premise behind resurfacing is inducing a certain level of controlled injury to the skin to promote skin healing. This can be accomplished with thermal injury (lasers), mechanical (dermabrasion) and chemical (chemical peels). In regards to being "least" invasive, this is not true. The term laser is general and not specific. There are many lasers in medicine and the specific laser (ie co2 vs erbium vs nd:yag) must be known in order to determine its "invasiveness". Additionally, the experience of the user as well as the settings will also determine the level of injury or "invasiveness". Remember that either modality of resurfacing (laser, dermabrasion or chemical peels) can result in scarring if not done correctly.

The lower, center of the back of my head feels like there's an injury (long cut) and burns, but there's nothing topical. What could this be?
Possible shingles: If only on one side of head it could be shingles from prior chicken pox. This commonly presents as an uncomfortable skin sensation before the rash shows. The issue is not the rash, which clears rather quickly, but rather that you can develop pain that lingers- post herpetic neuralgia. See your MD for evaluation so you can start appropriate medication early if needed and avoid long term problems. ...Read more

An injury: The seriousness of the injury depends on how deeply the skin is injured: a superficial burn is like a sunburn and will generally heal quickly, perhaps with a little peeling. A full thickness burn extends through the entire thickness of the skin and will not heal on its own except by scarring and contracture. Between these two extremes are partial thickness burns-some heal, some don't. ...Read more

Depends: The answer to your question depends on the size of the burn and the depth of the burn. A 3rd degree burn is a full thickness burn involving all layers of the skin. If it can't be excised and closed primarily, it will likely need a skin graft. Some partial thickness burns (2nd degree) may require grafting also if they cannot heal in a reasonable amount of time. ...Read more

Matter of degree: There are 3 degrees of burn-1, 2, and 3 graded by severity.
