Why there is no HPV test for men?

Why there is no HPV test for men?

Several reasons: There's little incentive for companies to make tests for men. Unlike women, in men HPV lesions (warts etc) usually are easy to see and diagnose, so lab test isn't needed. There is no point in testing men without lesions; up to half age 18-25 would be positive, with no treatment. Most such infections never cause disease and testing would not help prevention. Instead of testing, rely on vaccination! ...Read more

Just diagnosed with hpv. What actions should my boyfriend take? Is there a test for men?

Generally no test: Some doctors will test men, but it is rare. There's no need for your partner to be tested, though. If you hpv you can assume that he does too. Because men rarely (there are some exceptions) have hpv related cancers we don't worry too much about whether or not they have it. The hpv vaccine has recently been approved for boys, though, so if he's under 26 he shouls be able to get vaccinated. ...Read more

Not usually done: If the male has genital warts, then they can be biopsied, but this is rarely necessary. I don't know of any commercial testing available for men as far as testing the penis. I believe anal warts can be tested in a similar way that we test a cervix (thin prep pap with hpv testing). ...Read more

Human papillomavirus: Can we expect blood tests in the future? What about a cure even for hpv? Very curious.. (27yr old male)

No and no. Sorry!: No blood test for HPV is commercially available or expected soon. They are used in research but not accurate enough for patient care. Once a blood test is positive, it is positive for life, long after the infection is gone. True cure of HPV also is unlikely. Happily, the immune system clears almost all infections, and the large majority cause no disease, even the types with the high cancer risk. ...Read more
