Is it safe to ingest magnesium sulfate (epsom salt)?

Is it safe to ingest magnesium sulfate (epsom salt)?

Depends on dose: Too much will cause diarrhea, and Magnesium Sulfate by mouth tastes bitter. 1 tablespoon of epsom salts dissolved in 6-8 oz water is a laxative dose, and it tastes quite horrible, but it is as safe as taking any other form of magnesium. There are better ways to replete magnesium. Http://drfairchild. Blogspot. Com/2012/12/proper-thyroid-testing. Html.

Give me drug profile of magnesium sulfate including dose, therapeutic uses, side effects?

Several uses: Magnesium sulfate is commonly used to stop premature labor, and to prevent eclamptic seizures, and may also be beneficial for a baby born prematurely. Typically a "loading dose" of 4-6 grams is used, followed by 2-3 grams per hour given intravenously. Side effects including flushing, dry mouth, blurred vision, and nausea, and are usually worse for the first 24 hours a woman gets the medication.

Labor. Are there any serious side effects to the mother and/or baby due to using magnesium sulfate when not needed?

Labor. Are there any serious side effects to the mother and/or baby due to using magnesium sulfate when not needed?

? need? Effect?: Magnesium sulfate is one of the better tolerated methods of handling maternal blood pressure in labor. Maternal effects at higher levels include respiratory depression, low blood pressure & heart rhythm block. It is a category 1 (no risk) for the fetus although I occasionally see respiratory depression, apnea spells in a newborn if it has high blood levels, which fades after they start to urinate.

What is the treatment for magnesium sulfate overdose?

What is the treatment for magnesium sulfate overdose?

Define overdose: If you mean high mag levels after mag sulfate I.V. Was given, then you need to know that mag level can be elevated after I.V. Dose, temporarily, until it shifts spontaneously into mag storage. I.E. It is okay to be hi right after I.V. Dose. It is not ok to stay elevated a few days later. Lasix (furosemide) diuresis could correct this under a physician's supervision. It's also is okay to watch it decine on own.

My sister drank water with magnesium sulfate every day and she lost a lot of weight rapidly. Why?

My sister drank water with magnesium sulfate every day and she lost a lot of weight rapidly. Why?

Rapid weight loss: Your sister lost weight and most of it was water. Magnesium is given to induce diarrhea in patients who will have a colonoscopy. If she did have the diarrhea, most of it was water and that is the cause of her weight loss. Rapid weight gain or loss is always due to gain or loss of water weight.

Can magnesium sulfate overdose cause long term cardiac problems?

Can magnesium sulfate overdose cause long term cardiac problems?

Depends on symptoms: The way to recognize mag overdose is blood work that shows increase in values. If the "overdose" caused heart rhythm problems that caused a cardiac arrest, then long term problems are possible. But if "overdose" means increase in blood level, then it is not important. Usually after Magnesium Sulfate infusion, levels in blood go up before they normalize by moving out of blood into storage in cells.

Are medicines like magnesium sulfate and steroids proved safe in pregnancy?

Are medicines like magnesium sulfate and steroids proved safe in pregnancy?

Yes!: Steroids either for fetal lung maturation or for asthma in pregnant women are very safe as long as supervised by a physician. Magnesium sulfate has a good safety track. The maternal blood levels need to be monitored. Occasionally, newborns may show some lethargy when exposed during labor. The baby's pediatrician will be informed and precautions taken at birth.
