Diff. absorption and: Magnesium always occurs as a salt in combination with other things such as chloride, oxide, glycine, citrate, taurine etc. Some forms are poorly absorbed; for example magnesium oxide is only 4% absorbed, so it does not raise magnesium much but is a good laxative. Different mag salts: You cannot take magnesium alone. It has to be compound with something like oxide, citrate, or sulfate. We call these salts of magnesium. Like the salt of table sodium chloride. But you can take sodium in other forms like sod bicarb (in baking soda). Mag citrate causes diarrhea that's why it is used for constipation. Also, good for preventing kidney stones. Depends: Both can be used in magnesium diciency. Magnesium Citrate used for bowel irrigation and cause diarrhea. Citric acid will increase stomach acid and assimilation & should be taken with meal. More mag in Mg oxide: Mag gluconate has less magnesium on weight to weight basis i.e. On milligram to milligram basis. But the product you buy may tell you how much of magnesium on it. Sometimes they specify "contains however many milligrams of mangesium". I think so: Interesting question. I spent quite a bit of time researching this and have not found a definitive answer, but as far as i could tell they are different names for the same thing. If any doctors here have other information i hope they will share it. Elemental magnesium has a positive charge to it (technically a +2 charge) so the only way to get it into a pill form that you can take orally is to mix it with something that is negatively charged so that the resulting compound is neutral. It can be used to..: It can be used to prevent calcium oxalate kidney stones. Since you have already had kidney stones, i supect that they were trhis type. It is not used to treat other types of stones as a preventitive. Most people will prefer the GoLytely (polyethylene glycol) initially but start to dislike it long before the gallon is gone. Magnesium citrate is worse intially but there is much less of it.
