what is difference between IgM and IgG for western blot for lyme. positive for IgM but not IgG, what does that mean? tks

Recent infection: Hi. IgM is present only with recent infection. After IgM levels fall away, IgG takes over for ongoing and recurrent exposure to antigen. (The antibodies in this picture are IgG's). I'm glad your doc was on the ball. She/he may have saved you a world of hurt by making the diagnosis promptly. Good luck! ...Read more

How can someone test positive for two Lyme-specific bands on western blot and NOT have been exposed to Lyme disease? What is magic about 5 bands?

How can someone test positive for two Lyme-specific bands on western blot and NOT have been exposed to Lyme disease? What is magic about 5 bands?

Immune complexities: Lyme disease is caused by a certain type of bacteria called a 'spirochete'- they are a whole class actually of bacteria and believe it or not can be found commonly in the mouth or elsewhere in the environment. You have to reach a certain 'threshold' with Lyme testing because there could be some cross-reactivity coming from these other types of bacteria. The immune system is extraordinarily complex ...Read more

Not enough info: This test is not evidence of lyme but also not proof you don't have it! ultimately lyme is a clinical diagnosis. 20-30% of those who have it never have a positive western blot. It's really important that the test include the 31 & 34 bands & most labs don't check it- igenex is the best lab for a thorough test. See a doc who uses igenex as that is someone able to make a proper diagnosis.See comment:. ...Read more

Why would the infectious disease dr be ignoring my highly positive Lyme tests?

Can only guess but..: I have no way to know- this is a good question to ask him/her. But i would see another dr. Who will take them seriously. Few areas in medicine are more controversial or polarizing than lyme. Most id specialists feel lyme is readily cured with 4-6 weeks of antibiotics but this is seldom the case.See a doc with special interest & expertise in lyme: http://www.Ilads.Org/lyme_disease/about_lyme.Html. ...Read more

Is an IgG positive Lyme test a risk?

Lyme disease: Lyme diagnosis is made on one's history, exposure to tick that carry lyme disease in the setting of typical signs and symptoms . If a doctor confirms the typical bulls-eye rash lab testing is not required for diagnosis. Igb g positive indicates potential infection with lyme disease and may be present even after the infection has resolved and should be utilized in conjunction with clinical featue. ...Read more

Can a positive Lyme disease western blot strip test be mistaken for another disease?

Can a positive Lyme disease western blot strip test be mistaken for another disease?

Yes!: No lab test is perfect, including the westen blot for lyme. There is an approximately 4% chance of a positive being a "false positive" test. There is also an approximately 20% chance of false negatives, someone with lyme not having a positive western blot. This is why lyme is ultimately a clinical diagnosis, with labs used to support a diagnosis. Other tests may also be useful. Please see comment:. ...Read more
