Luteinizing Hormone (Overview)

Luteinizing hormone (lh) is released by the master gland (pituitary) in the brain to cause ovulation. The egg is released from the ovary and ready to be fertilized. The ovary also then produces Progesterone to prepare the inside lining of the uterus for implantation of the fertilized egg and support it until the placenta takes over production of this vital hormone.

PCOS & Liver: With PCOS, many women have increased cholesterol. That can lead to fatty deposits in the liver as evidenced by US and by incresed ALT. The LH level is pulsatile so there is very little value in measuring it in women with PCOS. It is not one of the diagnostic criteria for determining PCOS.
