Some lung issue: Possible reactive airway disease, variant asthma, or some pulmonary issue, causing inflammation or mucus production that is affecting the tubes in your lungs, thus causing a wheeze (the sound made of air flowing through a constricted (usually clogged/inflamed) bronchial tube. The wheeze may come and go, and the dr. May of listened when it was absent. If this persists, get another eval. Good luck. ...Read more

I have whistling when exhaling. Doctor said lungs sound clear and the whistling is heard over the neck. X rays, laryngoscopy, PFT all normal. Causes?
Throat tightening: First one needs to find out if you are tightening up your throat when you are breathing out and thus the whistle. When this happens next time, relax your lower jaw to see if the whistling disappears. Although the PFT was normal, was it obtained at the time you had the whistling? If not, then asthma must be considered as well given that asthma is often an intermittent disorder. ...Read more

Can reflux cause wheezing? Peak flow 600. Albuterol doesn't seem to make it go away, just reduces the volume a little. X rays okay. Lungs sound clear.
Reflux & wheeze.: With GERD, especially with LPR, the refluxate can ascend from the esophagus into the pharynx, and then down into the airway causing inflammation and, eventually, a wheeze. It is possible, and we tend to see this in situations where optimal treatment for asthma is still not helping the breathing or wheezing. Anti-reflux medications would tend to help. ...Read more
Does lung cancer cause intermittent fleeting rib pain, or would this be advanced disease?? 25, doc says lungs sound clear, 9 -yr pack hstry
Non-specific: Fleeting chest pains are not specific for lung cancer. It could be caused by a host of other benign reasons like muscle pain, rib pain from strain or inflammation. Pneumonia or pleurisy can also cause it. If you are worried about lung cancer and you are a smoker, check with your doctor about a screening CAT scan of the chest. If it is negative, time to stop smoking! ...Read more

Get it checked out: If short of breath, then best to get it checked out by a primary care physician or cardiologist. 25 years old, quit smoking for 1 mnth, sob, intermittent chest pain that moves, doctors say lungs sound clear, no, cxr lung cancer??
Not cancer: Congratulations on your smoking cessation. Lung cancer doesn't present this way. The pain is almost certainly chest wall pain, but if you are really short of breath as well (and it's not just from discomfort), you need a competent fitness evaluation and perhaps spirometry in addition to your CXR and exam. Adult-onset asthma might be the explanation; it's manageable. Best wishes. ...Read more

Worsening dry cough after viral illness. Short of breathe. Fast heart rate. Dr says lungs sound clear could still be pnemonia? Temp steady at 37.4
PFT work up: It is common to have a cough after most of the other symptoms of a viral illness have resolved. The shortness of breath though should not occur in association with the cough. This may represent bronchospasm or another cause. I would advise a pulmonary function test. If your lungs are clear and you are not febrile, pneumonia is less likely. ...Read more

Good for you!: Congratulations on quitting smoking! The symptoms you describe are common in newly-quit ex-smokers. Had my lungs checked out, told I have upper resperitory infect. They said my lungs sounded clear but deminished... What does that mean?
No pneumonia: Generally, although not always, when you have pneumonia and listen to the lungs you can hear "rales" which are faint cracking noises on inspiration. Diminution of breath sounds can occur for many reasons, and since it is a very subjective assessment it may not be at all significant. If you are ill it might help to have a chest x-ray if your doctor is concerned. Best. ...Read more
