Fleischner criteria: Nodules are common, and tend to scare people. The following link has criteria often followed by radiology groups regarding your findings. Be cautious, but not worried. Best wishes. http://www.snm.org/docs/pet_coe/off_the_wall/fleis.pdf. ...Read more

The table moves as the xray tube and detectors spin around the patient 10 times a second or more! the image shows excellent soft tissue detail, enhanced with injection of intravenous contrast or oral contrast. This way the body is shown in slices, in any plane, usually axially, but ...Read more

Radiation from CT: This issue should be discussed with your pulmonary doctor and radiologist. There is some risk associated with the radiation from multiple ct scans. However, that risk is likely small compared to the risk of a nodule identified in the lung, and may not outway the risks of ct, in the long run. There should be a plan with a reasoned approach that minimizes the risk of ct that you can agree with. ...Read more

Mgt/workup: Your findings are of concern, and an exam documenting any lymphadenopathy is important. I would suggest seeing your PCP. Your symptoms may also be due to TB, cardiac disease, pulmonary embolism. A virtual online appt is available for follow up and to review your HRCT. healthtap.com/DosanjhMD Code: NCYHPZ ...Read more

Lung Nodules: are very common and fortunately most of the time are benign. Many people actually have these and are unaware. There are certain characteristics of nodules such as size and appearance that may sometimes be more worrisome. Also, a history of cigarette smoking may be a cause for concern. 6 months is a standard screening period for lung nodules. ...Read more

My dad has a lung nodule that has been stable for 5 years. This year the CT scan showed it grew 1mm. Can CT measurements be wrong?

Yes, it is not exact: Growing lung nodules can be cancer. But the growth has to be real which means increase of more than 2-3 mm before we can get concerned. The cross sections on ct are rarely at the same level so there is one or 2 mm variation between serially done ct scans. ...Read more

Lung (Definition)

Deoxygenated blood enters the lungs from the right side of the heart and travels to the lungs. When you inspire, oxygen flows into the lungs, transverses the capilliares and attaches to hemoglobin down a gradient. At the same time, co2 diffuses into the capilaries and is expelled with exhalation. Oxygen rich blood then flows to the left side of the heart and into the ...Read more

Ct Scan (Definition)

Ct scan uses data from a beam of xrays and reconstructs a cross sectional image of your body. It is a high dose of xrays and used only when the benefits outweigh the risk. Cancer risk is 1 in 500 in children. Also using iodinated contrast might cause transient renal failure in about 5% of patients. (contrast induced nepropathy) most do not explain this to the patient as ...Read more
